There’s a pet store nearby that my boyfriend and I love to visit – it’s one of those really small shops that actually has a small amount of live animals on a daily basis. We go there anywhere between once and 3 times a week just to enjoy the kittens and bunnies (and the huge French-lop they have there to entertain everyone).

Anyways, that place just takes in any pets that people find or don’t want (after getting them checked by a vet of course) and makes sure they’re healthy and adoptable. There’s always a few bunnies, and one time we saw this guy:

And my boyfriend told me that it looks like a hare or some mix of one, because domestic bunnies don’t ever get a color like that. Is that true? He knows a lot about them, but of course he might be wrong.

So we came back the next week, and that bunny was gone, but two more with that coat color were there (a dwarf? and a lop eared one). I only got pics of the dwarf.

Can anyone tell me what type of coat color this is? I have a feeling it’s not as uncommon as my boyfriend is thinking, but at the same time, I have never seen pictures or anything of bunnies with this color.

        Thanks for your answers! :3

NOTE: Sorry for the blurry pics, this was taken on my 10$ cell phone’s camera. .~.

Its agouti, and its a beautiful coloring in domestic rabbits. It’s common enough. And hares can’t breed with our domestic rabbits, they aren’t genetically compatible

I have an Agouti colored rabbit. Agouti coloring is the same as wild rabbit coloring. Agouti coloring is very pretty in my opinion.

There are also different types of agouti – my girl is a grey version, but she still has the hairs with black bands on them like the brown version does. It is a very pretty color!

Also, just for some more info, the specific shade of agouti on those rabbits is called chestnut. It’s one of the most common agouti shades though, so if you said “agouti” most people would know which shade you were referring to.

Agouti is a pretty color. I remember the discussion we had about the name of the color and the actual animal from Central/South America.

Apropos of absolutely nothing other than it’s a very cool video, this shows the body-type differences between rabbits and hares very well.  Besides, it’s cuter than heck and both critters are agouti-colored, so I guess it sort of ties in.    I especially like the video around the 1:06 mark–I never knew hares’ toes were sooooo long!

ETA: Twaddle.  It shows as an embedded video in the “Edit” stage, but doesn’t show up once it’s submitted.  Must play with it more.

What a great video! The hare is so cool looking – the little brown bunny is quite cute too.

Yeah, chestnut and brown/grey agouti pattern and colour is common. Thought the bun in 1st pic does have but of look of a wild rabbit bit young domestics can too.

To add further confusion, if you are in UK or Australia, the domestics can interbreed with the wild rabbits.

The dwarf in the 2nd pic does look agouti but the lop looks like sooty fawn to me.

Lol yeah, we were wondering if it was a wild hare or something.

                              Lol wow. Really?

That wasn’t the lop I was referring to. They all like to bunch up together and I was taking pics. That one, and the other lop that I was talking about, are still there! I want them so bad.

Cute — the first photo of the agouti colored bunny looks like New Zealand or Flemish?? —with those big ‘ol ears! And then when you came back and saw the other agouti colored bunny — it looks like a Netherland dwarf.
