I think my bun is dying. He hasn’t moved from his litter box in over a day now. I pulled his back legs up checking for flystrike (he’d NEVER let me do that before even if his tail were on fire: he haaaates being picked up, period.) and there is none. I shushhed him out of the box last night and tried to give him his fave treats, plus lettuce that he usually jumps on and no response. still there today. He did sleep on my bed til I woke up and then he slowly moved back to the box, foregoing food and water still. I called the vet in town and let the answering woman know my money situation which is zero income right now and was told she’s off today and they can’t see Bunny Bean til tomorrow morning.
Maybe that was their way to push me away due to being zero income. I did hear the door open while I was on the phone with them so obviously they’re taking people. ;_;
What can I do for him? He’s only a year and a half old.
I’m sorry to hear he’s not doing well. Can you call vet back and ask about payment plans? Are there other vets in your town? Some take CareCredit which I believe you can apply for online. But it sounds like Bunny Bean needs to be seen ASAP.
Do you have a local rabbit rescue nearby? Perhaps the people there could advise you.
Has he been pooing at all? Can you hear any tummy noises if you put your ear to his stomach?
How do his ears feel? Colder then normal or overly hot?
Is it very warm in your home at the moment?
{{{{vibes!}}}}
Thank you for the reply. Usually I have money; just you know how the worst case happens when you’re flat broke
She’s the only vet in town but I’ll take your advice and call back soon as I post this and inquire. No rescues far as I know. It’s a tiny wee town in the middle of nowhere so we’re limited. Lucky to have a bun savvy vet here <3
He has been pooping – though I Have to clean the box out for him so I can have an accurate assessment. I was so worried last night the cleaning slipped my mind. :/ I have not tried the ear to tummy thing so I’ll do that. I have the AC on in my room at 70 so it’s nice and cool in here. And his ears normally are warm but are not warm, but not cool either right now. Definitely less temp than the normal.
Oh good that he’s been pooping. That’s good!
Is he able to access water easily? Does he use a bottle or bowl?
How about how he is moving? Anything unusual?
I wonder if his teeth are giving him trouble or he’s got some other source of pain?
The litterbox is where mine sit also, when they’re not feeling well.
Can you make a slurry from his pellets and try to syringe feed him?
Cleaning the box is a good idea to see if he is actually pooping.
Do you have a credit card you can put the vet bills on until you get some money?
Lots of questions to come back to. I’m rather upset at the vet as they told me again I can not come til tomorrow morning. To me that seems vicious.
No credit card sadly. I’ll see if one of my three friends can help out though they’re pretty broke right now themselves (pay day isn’t for a while yet for them).
Moving: right as I sent the last reply, he suddenly jumped out of his cage, did a half oval, stopped and went ‘non moving’ bun again, then slinked back to the box. I gently lifted him out (another no no usually. We don’t pick Bun up unless we want clawing, heh) and cleaned the box. He’s now just outside the cage, I have a bowl of water (usually it’s from a bottle but I noticed it’s not delivering like it used to despite having nothing abscessing the ball etc) in front of him, as well as lettuce, pellets and a treat. He DID just take a wee sip of water but hasn’t shown much interest before or since.
I’m going to find out if the vet has an emergency number. WHY i never thought of that but just now beats me. :/ She’s amazing on cost: last time I took him there end of June, she checked for sore hocks (Which are cleared up now. I may use that syringe to try to feed him some water and mushed pellets as suggested UNLESS that’s not wise syringe wise. It WAS used for sore hocks meds), I had her check him fully all over, temp and belly check etc, plus trim his nails, checked his teeth and they are fine – and the total bill was 27.23 along with a supremely healthy bun.
I just don’t get why they’re putting this off. Of course the operator made mention that she knew nothing of rabbits herself. I’ll call back again (they’ll no doubt see me just to shut me up, haha. But I’m a worried upset angry bunny mommy. My loved one is ill and I can’t just wait. Gotta wait for a car ride but maybe I’ll just pack him up and GO anyway.) I’m scared to wait til tomorrow morning. I really am.
oh god he’s trying to hop and legs are shaking and no traction (Though it is on the non carpeted part of my floor) and that’s it. I’m getting hold of my friend at the store and taking him now. I’m going to call them, tell them im bringing him in and we’re going. I can’t take seeing this.
Is he a Rex? He looks like a Rex in your picture and they are more at risk of developing sore hocks. Have you been able to check them? Maybe that us why he’s staying in the box… It could be mire comfortable there.
What med was he given for that?
Goodluck with the vet office. I hope you can get him seen.
Also, since it’s not long since you were last there, they may book you in as a follow up which could be a reduced fee. Fingers crossed!
can’t go in. She is NOT there and they have no way to contact her. This is KILLING me. He’s on my bed just lying there so lethargic. I’m watching my baby die and I can’t do a THING about it until tomorrow morning at 8am. Three days ago I was told my student loans dried up and I can’t finish my bachelors degree til I pay off the 57k I owe them so far. And now I’m losing my bun.
I feel so lost and like this horrible person who’s just watching my baby go. I can’t do this. I can’t.
Do they have a vet they can refer you to? Most vets do that if they are not in.
hey have one that’s about 1.5 hours away and no one I know has the gas to take me there god I hate watching this. Why today of all days? I hear nothing in his tum when I listen. He an’t even lift his head. sorry spelign im in tears
Even a non-rabbit vet could give care to a rabbit, at the very least some fluids to keep him hydrated. I would start calling other offices and seeing if anyone can see him today.
Healing vibes to your sick bun. I hope everything gets cleared up or he can at least get help! It just seems wrong for a vet to turn away a sick animal especially when rabbits are so sensitive. Let us know how everything goes.
He just passed.
I am sooooo sorry to hear that, I am praying for your bun and you. (((((Healling Vibes))))))
I’m so so sorry.
Binky Free little one.
I’m so sorry Chromashadows. *Hugs*

I am so sorry for your loss.
For our members who are reading this terrible situation for you, I want to add that if you ever find yourself with a sick bunny and are delayed by your vet for any reason, and it’s an emergency, you can take your bunny in to the nearest general veterinarian and explain what is wrong. As Beka mentioned, any vet knows basics that may help, so if there is something they can do for you, it’s a good idea to try. That includes any small cat/dog vet in a strip mall a mile away. They are still certified to practice and have multiple animal knowledge. You can turn to the yellow pages in a crisis.
But in all fairness, bunnies are very good at hiding illness, and often take a turn for the worse very, very quickly. That’s why we say to call a vet if you even suspect something is wrong, even before writing to us here. They exhibit very subtle symptoms, so sometimes you can call a vet for advice first, and get their opinion on whether you should bring your bunny in. It can happen this fast, and is truly heartbreaking.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I hope you’re okay and that you can get through this all. I’ve never lost one of my buns and I can’t even imagine it. Just know you have the whole BB community to help you through this. <3 Others on here for sure have been through this and can help with the moving on process.
I’m so sorry. He is free now of any pain and discomfort, but I know for you, the pain and heart break will linger on. I am sorry that the vet was not helpful. Sounds like your bunny was very weak and who knows if he would have even survived the 1 1/2 hour car ride. Such a very sad situation. I know you are in full grieve mode and are heartbroken, I am so sorry for the loss.
I know that with my very first bunny, I learned a lot through the loss, and used the pain to help educate others due to what I had been through. I know you are not ready for that now as you need time to grieve. but in the future you may be able to . For example, before the loss of my first bunny, I didn’t realize how quickly a seemingly healthy bunny could decline soooo quickly nor did I understand fully what were the very subtle signs to look for until it was too late.
It also has been extremely difficult financially for many people –those who got a bunny when they had money, but then something happened – job loss, health issue, whatever, cleaned out any savings they hadt. But helping to educate and prepare people considering a bunny about the costs can be very beneficial to those are are already financially tight.
I ended up using what happened to my bunny to try and prevent it for others, and that at least provides me some comfort regarding the loss.
Sending huge hugs and healing vibes.
I’m holding off on getting another Bun until I have another job. Things did get very tight here as I’d lost my job to the economy. I also just lost my bachelors degree attempt 5 days ago cuz the loans ran out fully and I can’t go back til I pay off the 57k I owe which will never happen so I gotta pay all that back and get zero degree for the 2 years I’ve spent so far. So I’ve been dealing with that and now my bun died today. It’s a lot to handle at once.
I’m so sorry! I cried while reading your story ;(
You know it sounded just about the same condition Panda was in, when he passed. I aswell called vets but all were closed, it was a Saturday..
Panda couldn’t move, wobbly legs.
I read more about his condition and am wondering if Paralysis and hind limb weakness was it.
Hmm.. and Baylsascaris (Roundworm transmitted by feces) is something to wonder about.
Whatever happened to your baby, Its so sad
I am extremely sorry
((BINKY FREE BUNNY BEAN))
Thank you, Pandorachik. <3 I hated how helpless I felt. I take comfort knowing he slept by me on his own accord last night and then today came up by me to pass on. I was his comfort even then and that means so so so much.
got all teary eyed reading your story
sorry for your loss
at least like you said he spent his final moments with you
<3 thank you.
I tried to put his pic as my signature as I’ve seen others do with their lost loved buns but it’s just a link Can anyone help me out? I really want to see his face when I post.
I would hapily make one for you if you send me a pic you want then send you the link to paste in the signiture box. I would feel honered in your time of loss.
thank you. <3
Your so very welcome. Aww, you were his comfort, I’m sure :’)
If you need help or anyone to talk to you have all of BB and of course I would very happy to comfort you if you inbox me.
RIP BUNNY BEAN! </3
I’m so sorry for your loss. I cried whilst reading your heartbreaking story
My sympathies to you, chromashadows. My bunny passed on several months ago so I know how awful you must be feeling. I’m sure you gave him a good life during the time you spent together. I also have a ton of student debt so you’re not alone with that either. <>
I am so sorry about your bunny and your situation!
It probably doesnt matter to you now but I thought I would share my experience. I live in a small town, and there is a 24hr emergency animal clinic here. They are expensive and require to pay upfront. The minimal cost is $100 just for an appointment. But they offer application for credit with some company that can be filled out right there even at nighttime. I had to use their clinic twice for emergencies. Ended up paying $100 for a visit when our bunny got attacked by a dog. Maybe there is a clinic like that where you live. Just good to know the resources for the future.
To piggyback off what LittleDoll was saying — when we took our bun to the vet for his hurt foot (it was also an emergency service but we found out our actual normal vet takes it too) they had an application for a credit card specifically for your animals. My boyfriend did the application on his phone and was approved for $700 on the spot. So we used that for the visit that day. It’s a great card to have for emergencies with your little guy! It’s my boyfriends card — so if you’re interested in the name, I’ll get it from him later when he gets home!
Yes please do, tanlover. That would be amazing for when ever I get another bun. <3
Another good thing to do is to open a savings account for emergencies, and put money into it every paycheck, even if its only $5. And don’t spend it unless it is an actual emergency, like a needed vet visit, or the like. Vet care MUST be provided for your animals, as they can’t go to the doctor on their own, and depend on us to take them. It’s the law in many places, as well. So save up so you don;’t have this kind of tragedy happen again.
It’s called CareCredit — here’s the link for it : http://www.carecredit.com/vetmed/
Hope this helps and I hope you can get another bun soon! <3
I have Care Credit also. It helped tremendously when I had both my boys neutered at the same time and it was a little over $400! I like it because if I pay it off within 6 months, it’s interest free. It’s also comforting to know that its there in case of emergencies. I am not really happy using a credit card, though, so my plan is to do what MonkeyBun said and start putting away a little each paycheck for this type of thing. That’s always the best way to go, if possible.
Very sad to read this.
I lost my previous bunny Tussi before xmas last year and I was shattered.
I can imagine how you feel.
If you want I can print a picture for you to remember your fuzzbutt by.
I am a photo-nut so I got some gear, and I can do up to 24″ by 36″ and I can also do it on canvas.
Send me a message if you want me to print something.
I just wish I could do more.
Oh such a sad story I just lost both my boys and while I have read everything I can find on bunnies, I was not prepared for how quickly something can happen. My baby was at the vet’s office when he got sick and despite their best efforts, he died within minutes These are fragile little creatures that we love. I’m so sorry for your loss
