Peter had a big molt about 3 mths ago, and now it’s happening again? Less hair is coming off though, and in not as big patches. Is this normal? I thought they had molts every 6 mths…

From what I’ve heard is that rabbits molt about every 3 months (4 times a year) and that usually two are bigger molts and two are smaller molts. Completely normal, every rabbit has their own cycle

My rabbits go through big sheds several times a year. I dont usually time them but Id say about every 4 months or so sounds right. They like to keep us busy.

Oof. Nibs is the never-ending molt monster. We just finished one big one and now he’s shedding from his “saddle”. He’s healthy as a horse; he just likes to make sure the living room is decorated in Early American Sable at all times.

haha I’m not sure the shedding ever ends. Just when I thought bunjamin was done with this last one that managed to produce 5 more rabbits from all the fur, he started shedding again. I’ve come to accept that there’s nothing you can do about the fine mist of bunny hair covering everything.

All these molting posts scare meeee. LOL. My buns all just turned 5 months and none of them have molted yet — anyone know at what age they typically do their first molt?

Tait first molted at 8 months and it was badddddddd, he usually only has one bad one per year though and the rest are small. Nate on the other hand I got at 3 years and now that he is finally healthy and neutered he is going through a disgustingly large molt. But he also had a thick winter coat, from his old home… that I’m sure kept him outside, so he has more to lose

I’m dreading it sooooo bad. Our Tans have really short hair so hopefully it won’t be as bad. I try and brush them once a week but it’s pretty much pointless because nothing even comes out in the brush, hahah.

My bunnies shed about 4-5 times per year. Usually 2-3 of them are heavy sheds and the rest are very light sheds. Every bunny has their own cycle. I’ve personally observed that most of the bunnies at the shelter I volunteer at go through major sheds around the start of spring, the start to middle of summer and the middle of winter. I remember reading that shedding is mainly triggered by changes in temperature and day length…not sure if that’s always the case, though.

As for when bunnies have their first shed, we got Ms. Rabbit when she was an estimated 4-6 months old and she was shedding what I now think was her “baby coat”. That’s one reason why I got her – I really wanted to get her home so I could brush her.

Hahahahah! Hopefully the fact that my condo is always the same temp and never changes will help then! And I’ll have bunnies that never shed. Wishful thinking I know, haha.

Well I know with horses its actually the change of daylight not temperature that triggers shedding. Not sure about bunnies. The non-shedding bunny…wouldnt that be nice!
