Hi everyone, looking to expand little Effie’s cage now she’s settled in, using NIC cubes. Space is limited for a place for her, would 1×3 as a base space be ok? She’s a miniature lop (the same as a holland lop in the US I believe) and she’s 6 weeks old, it would have probably 3 floors. Would I need to expand it to 2×3 when she’s grown more?

ETA: She’s not in the cage all day, she’s in there in the morning, which I’ve noticed is when she sleeps, until around dinner time, and then she’s out in the living room with us until we go to bed.

Generally, speaking the more space you can give her the better. If you can do the 2×3 now, I would. And three floors would be great.

Also, a mini lop and a holland lop are actually two different breeds of lops. I have a mini myself

Ok thanks I’ll see what I can squeeze in. I’m in the UK so Miniature Lop here is the equivalent of a holland lop in the US x

Back in my apt in Philadelphia, which was small, but had high ceilings.  I found it easier to build up then out.  I started w/ a dog crate which was probably about 1×3 and built multiple layers up.  I think she had 3 complete floors and a roof top deck and several half floors to use as rests or bunny stairs.  It’s my understanding that Holland lops are smaller than the mini-lop.  Mini lops are usually around 6 + lbs and Hollands are the smaller around 3-4 lbs.  Both are fluffy beasts w/ the lop ears.  I’ve had both (Chewbacca-mini, she was about 7 lbs & now my Tobey-Holland about 3 lbs).

Yes thats what I’m thinking, would it be ok building up rather than out? Building levels for her too. UK miniature lops are between 2lb 10oz and 3lb 8oz so she’ll only be small fully grown x

I honestly think they enjoyed the build up rather than the build out, esp when Jessica was younger & had an easier time getting around.  They had enough levels to get away from each, the cats, & the humans.  They also had a lot of exercise space, even though it was up.  The Lionhead did require instruction on getting to other levels initially, but it was really the best option we had at the time.  Now we have a penned in area (the front hallway) of our house.  I think Jess still misses the ups/downs.  There is a pic of her old habitats in the habitat section.  Its the multilevel condo w/ the black bunny inside.  Good Luck!
