Either my bunnies hold the world record for most shedding or everyone else lives with the same thing lol. It’s insane how much hair they shed on a daily basis. One is a dwarf/rex mix and the other is a lionhead, both males. We live in Florida, I know its hot here but they are indoor bunnies and the air is never hotter than 77-78 degrees. Is there ANYWAY to minimize the shedding. I read online bunnies shed etc they produce new fur coats or w/e but they say they go through cycles. It seems like my bunnies do not go through any type of cycle and they just shed constantly, I truly don’t know how they have any fur left. We are gonna be having a baby in the future (next 1-2 years) and I am afraid of a baby being around all this shed fur. Any tips about shedding or parents with babies feel free to help me out! Thanks =)

These probably aren’t tips that you hadn’t already thought of but I think the only way to manage it is to just grit your teeth (literally, bc you’ll inhale the hair and get it stuck on that little spot on the back of your tongue and there is NO getting rid of it!) and become best friends with your vacuum. Stepping up the grooming regiment helps them shed it a little quicker and if you do it in the bathroom or laundry room, it’s pretty easy to sweep up (or rather just kind of ball up). They go through a shedding routine at least twice a year. Some say that one is lighter than the other… I haven’t found that to be true. Every time Huck sheds, she sheds so much that, like you, I can’t believe she has any fur left.
If you have trouble grooming, here are some tips:
          1) some put the rabbit on a countertop. This keeps the bun from being confident enough to jump around and bite as much. DO NOT LEAVE THE BUN UNATTENDED bc it can get hurt if it jumps off.
          2) Use a good comb. Cat brushes do nothing but make you crazy. Try the furbuster, it’s all that works for me at least. They sell it on the BB store. The teeth are kind of sharp and buns have sensitive skin, so be gentle.
          3) Plucking!!! I admit that this has become a sort of OCD tic for me. I pluck Huck nonstop, every time she runs past, I am picking off little bits of fur that stick out. If the fur is loose, it doesn’t hurt but I think it tickles. Some buns don’t mind it, mine is not one of those and I get honked at a lot.
          4) Get your hands damp and pet your bun. This one works great but it’s a pain bc you need a shower afterwards.
          5) Vacuum every day during shedding and carry a lent roller in your car/purse/brief case/backpack.

Good luck! Welcome to being a bun parent. Shedding is a pain but I don’t think rabbits have much of a dander problem (if any? someone help me here?). I think most people that find they have allergy problems with rabbits are because of the saliva, urine or (most frequently) the hay. There are ways to reduce those allergens if that is what you are worried about with the baby.

Oh hun, I live in Florida so I feel you. There’s honestly not much that you can do to cut down on the hair. I find myself vacuuming a lot. We have a tiny dust buster that I use to fully vacuum out her cage every day. And the hair that catches on the edges of the cage I get with a Swiffer duster. I do make sure to brush my bun everyday. I know it seems over much. But when you live in Florida it’s something that you haveeee to do. I finger brush her daily with the dust buster by me to suck up the hair that caught in my fingers. And at least once a week I make sure to brush her really well. I would have someone with you with a vacuum as you are brushing your bun though to catch some of the hair flying in the air. It really helps to make sure you don’t tuffs flying around. I hope this helps. I know it’s hard to deal with all the hair in the heat.

I agree, its just something we have to accept as bunny parents. However, I do the same thing as others have mentioned (as far as vacuuming). I feel like I’m constantly vacuuming (even the end tables, piano, etc). As far as brushing them, I find that wetting my hands and just running my fingers through their coat (almost like a massage) helps the most. Once they’re damp, I also use the hairbuster brush and that keeps the fur from flying around so much–I, too, do this in my laundry room on top of the dryer. I’m sorry, I don’t have kids, so I don’t have any advice about having babies around the hair (although my husband whines about it sometimes, so it’s almost like having a baby! LOL) But I can tell him to get over it! Ha! Ha! Hopefully others with more experience in this department will reply and give you some good advice.

Leopold seems to shed constantly, while Wooly will shed it all at once a couple times per year. Honestly, I think Leopold makes a bigger mess. His hair is short and a regular brush will not pick up the hairs. If he’s running around it seems like the hair is flying off him everywhere. I will use the hair buster comb on him, but it is sometimes easier just to vacuum him. He doesn’t mind. He’s deaf and he will just bonk the vacuum hose with his nose anyway. Wooly, on the other hand, seems a little easier to manage. He has wooly hair, which will detach and slowly slide off. There will be a ton of loose hair on him when he is shedding and if I stay on top of it then most of it will end up in a brush and not flying around the house. The only problem is that he doesn’t particularly like being brushed, so I usually have to trick him.

How often do you brush your rabbits? I agree with the others that it may be best to brush them in a room where it is easy to sweep up the hair that comes off.

I agree with Huck about the constant almost OCD plucking. Anytime Cinnabun is within reach, it begins. I especially pluck around her bum area as I can’t get it very good with a comb. Invest in lint rollers. I have one in each room the bunny is allowed to go.

Well there is nothing you can do to make a bunny stop shedding, all you can do is try to control the hair that comes off. I go through pet hair fabric sweepers like mad. They are great for getting bunny fur off furniture and the stuck on carpet stuff that the vaccuum doesn’t get. Pledge makes some and I’ve found some at dollar stores.

I pretty much groom my buns every day. It keeps the hair to a minimum but the disapproval to a maximum.

LOL I often wonder that same thing-is everyone else covered in hair all the time?

Actually what was quite funny was I was cleaning my keyboard out at work the other day; and the amount of dog and bunny hair in the keyboard was quite staggering-as I’ve never had any pets at work with me….lol so that hair rode in on my clothing!

I should also point out that my brand new fresh clean bed sheet has dog prints all over it from a wet muddy dog who lept in right after we changed the sheet. This is a common occurrence.

So tips? Get used to it Make friends with other pet owners so you don’t have to clean your house top to bottom for someone to come over. Pet owners don’t blink at a wave of floating pet hair that is caught in the breeze, swirling down the hallway

Also buy a Roomba it helps a lot!

I don’t think there’s any way around it!

One thing I found helpful was giving them a rug for their living space, instead of a hard surface. When they had the waterproof mat, the fur just blew all over. Now, lots of the hair sticks to the fibers of the rug where I can vacuum it, instead of it floating around the house.

The funniest fur moment was when a new co-worker came to my house for the first time and wanted to meet the bunnies. She saw they were in the maze haven, so she immediately went down on her stomach so she could talk to them and see them better. When she stood up, her black shirt was completely covered in white bunny hair. lol She went down so fast I didn’t have time to warn her about the fur problem.

I feel your pain!!! Nate is going through the worst shed of all time history atm. It’s a post neuter, hormone surge/heat wave/moving stress shed 😐 haha. I’ve just been taking him outside once a day and giving him a good brushing out there. It’s literally impossible to keep the hair from flying around during a brushing (unless the vaccume is going right beside you), so I just go outside and let the hair fly into the neighbors yard

That’s funny Elrohwen! The funniest thing I had was a moving “dust bunny”. I saw a ball of hair inching its way across the floor. I took a closer look only to find a spider had become entangled in said dust bunny and he was trying to go somewhere with it.

Loki goes through spurts of shedding. I pluck when he’s sitting by me and I’m petting him, but nothing ever comes off, yet he sheds like crazy on top of his hut and the corners of his cage. Another thing we do when he gets to where he’s shedding a lot is just roll the lint roller right over him. We have one from the dollar store to use for him and the cat, and its sticky enough to lift off the hair, but not so sticky that it pulls any out that isn’t already loose. He doesn’t mind it at all and it helps to get all the loose hairs off.

I have 5 vacuums lol. Plus lint rollers. My rabbits have hair catching rugs and I brush them both in the morning and at night. I learned a long time ago with living dogs, cats, rabbits and ferrets that all shed a ton to live with some amount of hair. Otherwise I would be vacuuming 24/7.

I used to pretty much dress all in black. Now I select my wardrobe colours based on how much pet hair will stand out. Grey is a good choice. And I can never wear any materials like velvet or fleece. And keeping a sticky roller in the car glove compartment is a must. Even if I sticky roll right before I leave the house, by the time Im in the car, I have hair on me again.

Yes, fleece is the worst! DH has a pair of fleece pants (like sweatpants, but fleece) and he doesn’t wear them anymore because they get so covered with hair.

Hmmmmm…I have two spinning wheels and a bunch of hand-spindles, so maybe I should run a bunny-slave-spinning-class. I hear you on the shedding, believe me. Everything I spin is “/bunny” as in, “merino/bunny”, “alpaca/bunny”, “BFL/bunny”…..

While in NM last year, I saw a woman that was spinning yarn. Her rabbit was sitting on her lap and she was plucking it for more hair, then spinning it!!!! I was entranced

lol I vacuumed up a whole bunny the other day! It’s crazy how much they shed. Both my buns are short haired bunnies. I don’t know how they can shed so much. I would think the dog or the cats would shed more but nope…they bunnies win at the shedding game! =P

(She doesnt quite like to be held yet.) my dustbuster is my best friend though…its constantly in my hands. my bunns dont even mind the sound anymore.
