In 2 weeks I am getting my first bunny.I just bought him a carpeted cat cave to use as a hidey house. I thought it was a great idea at the time, until i remembered that carpet fibers aren’t good for bunnies to ingest.  So do you think he will chew it up? Should i return it and get something else?

        this is the cat cave

if this isnt good for him…do you have any other ideas for hidey houses?

I think it will depend on your bun! Some bunnies will chew up anything fabric or carpet like beds and blankets and some will actually use them. My bun had a cat bed she used to love sitting in and sleeping in but I know of others who would tear something like that to shreds. If you’d like something for your bun to have as a “hidey” you could try one of those plastic castle types from a store (but he may chew this as well), a willow basket turned upside down or even a cardboard box! A lot of buns seem to love these and if they chew the cardboard (as long as it isn’t being ingested in large amounts) it doesn’t hurt them. You’d have to replace it more frequently but it’s safe and can provide entertainment!

If you’re concerned about your bun having somewhere soft to sit/sleep on it will also depend on your bun, some prefer the cool hard floor so they will push anything soft out of the way it really just depends on their personality! Sorry I couldn’t be a ton of help. I bet some other members have some cool home-made hidey box ideas they might share. Or you might get some ideas from the habitats gallery here is a link

I agree with Princess Smudge – depends on the rabbit.

I have one for one of my rabbits and he loves to hop on top. When he had a partner, she would go on the inside and he would hop on top.

I have one for my other rabbit Bobby and he just ignores it altogether.

So, I think it’s fine if he would actually use it. I have for my larger rabbits a willow tent thing that they like to lay under.

I agree, I have six buns and they all have different personalities and likes. Mr. Hopper Loves boxes, Nibbles loves his Blankie, Blue and baby prefer the hard floor. and Chipmunk and Hazel are still figuring thins out.

I have two of those fuzzy condo like this. My rabbit chews on the material, but she spits it out. It definitely depends on the rabbit! 99% of the time, she uses it as a stepper to get onto my bed or the couch.

I’m one of the people who can’t put carpeted stuff in my buns cage. In fact the door mat with barely any fibers I used in one of his condos started becoming a problem too. He just likes to eat what he chews and chew everything. So I’ve been using willow houses and baskets for his cage (sold on BB and some pet stores). They also make wooden ones at the pet stores that are safe. But Bunjamins all time favorite is a cardboard box. Try to avoid waxy ones that “shine” that stuff isn’t good either. And make sure to remove the tap if he can chew it. I only have to remove tap if it’s lifting or on edge of box. He sometimes makes his way to the tape down the center but that’s when he gets a new box.

Congrats on becoming a bunny slave! We’d love to see pics and meet them when you get them
