A few days ago, Sunny’s left eye was a little “squint-y”, then later that day I noticed a little eye “booger” thing in there, that floated/moved around the eye. It was gone later, I figured he got it out on his own. Now today I notice his eye “squint-y” again. I took some video of it. What could this possibly be? Do I need to take him to the vet? Thanks!

I forgot to add: It DOES appear that he CAN open it fully, so it’s not “stuck” that way…

It’s pretty hard to tell. Is it red?

I don’t think it’s red, and he seems to be acting normal, aside from the eye being half open most of the time.

I guess I might be concerned that it is irritating him and I would want to get it checked out if it was my rabbit and I felt concerned.

yeah I would head to the vet. I took Noot for a small amount of discharge and no apparent pain and it turned out to be a scratched cornea which required drops and pain management. They really can have something bad (that could lead to blindness) without really appearing to have a big issue.

upon further inspection, i can see a small, irregular shape(circular) clear film near the bottom of his eye. I will call the vet in the morning and see if I can bring him in. Thanks everyone!

Let us know what the vet says.

When I first saw him this morning, he wasn’t squinting, so I picked him up to examine his eye closely and did NOT see that stuff in there. I decided to wait it out instead of taking him to the vet, since he seems completely normal. I will keep a close eye on him though, and if problems come back, I will most definitely take him in.

I found it really hard to see anything wrong at all when watching the video — but was it HIS left eye that was the problem? He might of scratched it or got something in it that irritated it. But the thing that was moving around in his eye — was it just sleep goo — was it in the middle? If it’s toward the corner — could it be the third eyelid you are noticing?

Yes, it was HIS left eye. I believe (although not 100% sure), that it was sleep goo. (The stuff that was moving around on the eye.) It wasn’t toward the corner. Sunny is my first rabbit, so I am new to everything “out of the ordinary”. But I don’t think it was the third eyelid. That stuff went away later that night or the next day. This stuff I saw when I made the post looked a little different. It didn’t look as gooey and was more clear and “flat”, unlike the eye booger thingy.  I am happy to report that all is still well with the eye!

I didn’t want to mention this the other day because I thought it best that he be seen by a vet if it persisted. However, Sammy gets this flat, whitish eye goo that floats around one of her eyes, including in the center, about the size of my pinky nail. I gently pull it to the corner and very, very gently lift or slide it out. It clearly bothers her to have it there, and she is very glad to have it removed. It is definitely a mucusy substance, but bigger than normal eye goo. It happened about once every 3-6 months for about a year or two, often much less often than that, and hasn’t happened in a long, long time. She was so healthy otherwise and so normal once I removed it that I didn’t have it looked at. But that was only because I knew her eyes were healthy when checked by the vet at other times.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Sunny had just gone for a wellness exam about a month or so ago, and everything was fine. I was definitely going to take him to the vet that morning, had the problem still been there.  I think I might be too afraid to try to remove, or move, something from his eye.  Do you have any idea what it is or causes it?

No, I don’t, which is another good reason to take him in. It could be excessive mucus from an allergy, or a blocked duct, or something only the vet can detect with the right instruments. Spockie used to have a clear discharge from an eye that turned out to be a duct that was easily treated with some ointment she prescribed, but I had to have him examined to know that. Best to be safe.
