        Hi all,

I’m new to the forum and to owning a bun. My baby boy is booked in to get neutered this Friday and I am terrified  The vet is very experienced with rabbits so I do trust her. But I can’t help but to be scared . Did any of you feel this way before getting your bun done?

Also, any tips on pre and post surgery care? What to expect etc?

        Thank you

Usagi was neutered almost two weeks ago, and I was extremely scared too! It was probably for the same reasons that you are scared too. Not because of the vet, but because of the anesthetic, and knowing what to do after the surgery. Make sure the vet you are going to does not require the bunny to fast before the surgery because that is not good for their digestive systems. After the surgery Usagi slept almost 24/7 for about two days. I gave him pellets, alfalfa, and timothy hay all the time. I also gave him some veggies, and since he was only eating a little bit, he also had those about the whole time. About 12 hours after the surgery the vet told me to offer him some banana, pumpkin, and pineapple. I also gave him a little Critical Care, and within a few hours he had eaten all of it. I also gave him 1-2 treats a day. One thing I wasn’t completely sure about was about 12 hours after the surgery Usagi was having some diaherrea, but I learned that that’s okay as long as it stops in a few days. For 2-3 days after the surgery let your bunny stay in his cage. Maybe the second or third day start checking the incision to make sure it’s not really red or swollen. Make sure there is no need for your bunny to have to stand on his hind legs either, like to reach a water bottle if that’s what he uses. Good luck with the neuter!

Thank you so much. That is exactly what i’m terrified about. You’ve made me calm down  Glad to know what to expect before it actually happens or I would be terrified after the surgery

Good luck! Since your vet is very experienced, then you are in good hands! Just have some nice wet veggies for after surgery in case he wants to eat and let him decide when he is ready to be active again. You’ll both do fine

It is scary but just remember that its very minor, routine surgery. I’m sure your boy will be fine. Boys are usually pretty quick to recover. When my buns went in for their surgeries, I took that time to completely clean and wash their cages and litter boxes. Infections aren’t that common, but having a clean area might help reduce that risk.

Your vet will probably send him home with pain meds.

Lots of luck and wishing your boy a quick recovery.

I had my two boys neutered just at the end of May and I was terrified and a nervous wreck too! However, they breezed thru it like nothing happened! I was so relieved and happy! Both were a little sluggish the first night but ate and drank like normal. I gave them their pain meds without much trouble (that was a big worry of mine) and everything went off without a hitch. Don’t be too worried, it sounds like you have a good vet and that makes a huge difference. Both were back to their old selves the next morning and wanted to run around, but like Usagi said, I had to keep them in their x-pen for about 36 hours to keep their antics to a minimum. They weren’t too happy about that! Ha! Ha! It’s normal to be worried about your baby, but don’t get too stressed out. Everything will be fine! By the way, HE IS ADORABLE!!!! What a cutie pie. I just wanna kiss his little face! We will all send good vibes out for you and Chester!

I just had Scat done on Thursday, i was scared partly because of the anesthetic, but also because i have only had him for a month. His previous owners kept him on shaved cedar bedding which i know can cause liver problems. I changed litters and waited a month hopefully to let any damage “correct” itself but there is just no way to know for sure. I went in fully prepared to pay for pre anesthetic blood work only to be told its not available for him because its a send out for rabbits (not really surprising in this area but disapointing). So i was terrified until the phone rang telling me he was out of surgery and doing fine. Scat was a little groggy that first night but by the next day he was acting like nothing had happened, eating everything in sight, etc. My only problem has been cheking the incision, unfortunately some of the suggestions about having him stand up and using a mirror didnt work for me and i have to pick him up every day to check, i had just really started earning his trust and now i have blown it, he runs and hides from me now.

It’s perfectly normal to be worried for our buns when they go into surgery…it sounds like you have a good vet though, so I’m sure your bun will be fine . Everybody has given you good tips on aftercare and management…vibes for a smooth operation!

Wow, thank you all so much for your kind replies. I’m so glad i stumbled across this site. It has so great info and everyone is so kind!  I’m feeling better about the surgery now. But I know I will be pacing around the house on friday waiting to hear back from the vet. I took Chester to the vet last week for a check up and to discuss the surgery and the vet was pleased with my boys health

I will most definitely follow the tips you all have given me. Thank you once again

I know exactly how you feel! I had one bun neutered and one spayed last Tuesday and I was a nervous wreck waiting. I even cried! LOL. So believe me, you’re not the only who has felt this way! The most important thing is to make sure you have a vet you know you trust. My little boy was CRAZY when we brought him home, the whole time he was acting like he hadn’t just had a surgical procedure done! It was sooo cute and funny.

Until he realized he couldn’t come out of his cage for a day or two — then he wasn’t too happy. I figured out an easier way to check his incision because he definitely wasn’t a fan of that. If you have a small fence or anything that has a hole in it really — I had him stand on it with his front paws and then (using a treat to get him to stand there for a second) and then flashed the flashlight down there and had a look! It worked really well for me.

I believe I will be by the phone in tears waiting for the vet to call back lol. My dog Gizmo had to have surgery last year to have a growth removed off his eyelid and I sat on my floor in tears waiting to get a call from the vet  I was so terrified because he is 13, has problems with high blood pressure and is blind. I trust the surgeon. She’s the one who operated on Gizmo and she is very experienced with rabbits and guinea pigs and she used to do all surgery work for the zoo, so she deals with all animals, big or small  Still can’t help but to worry though

Thanks for the tip to check the incision, tanlover  Hopefully it works well for Chester

I don’t really have anything more that I could add but I just wanted to say good luck!! I hope your bunny has a speedy recovery. I was so scared when I had my bunny spayed, I know how you feel!

I felt the exact same way when my bun went in to have it done 5 years ago. I was more scared because he was going under. It was a piece of cake and I will always have my buns fixed
