I went to check on my rabbit just now before I went to sleep and he hadn’t eaten his vegetables so I went to offer him a piece of apple and noticed his incisor is broken in half and just hanging there.

I’ve tried calling the emergency vets in my area and none are able to do anything for him and I don’t know what to do until monday. Any advice please, I’m really worried about him

Oh Crap… Pardon the language … You’re right, it is way too frightening to wait but you may not have a choice. Good Grief, any idea how it happened ? Can you try messaging jersey girl direct, she’s down here in Australia and might know otherwise we need to wait for the others to wake up and its the wee small hours of the morning on the other side of the hemisphere. I can’t offer advice on this but I’m here for moral support.

OK… Some good news at least… Providing there is no root or nerve damage the tooth will regrow. Apparently some breeds have fragile teeth but that’s mainly lion heads. Does he chew on his cage ? or could he have knocked his mouth or gotten hold of something “Verbotten” ? you will need to check around and get rid of the cause. Meanwhile as we wait for someone with more knowledge you know that it has only been a few hours, he is not going to starve to death and Yes, he is probably a little uncomfortable but this will only be short term… So big deep breaths, it will all work out.

I don’t know how it happened, he doesn’t chew on his cage. He might have smacked himself in the face with his cat scratcher but its just cardboard. I sat in his cage and he is acting fine, he is just hungry. I hand fed him his vegetables and now he has his nose poking through the x-pen bars begging to be let out. I think he completely broke off the bottom right incisor because I can’t see it at all and there was a tiny bit of blood but that is it.

Ugh, this had to happen on the weekend

OK, Hang in there. I can understand how scary it all is. Make him up a bowl of his favourite veg and cut it a little smaller. He ight knock out the hanging bit having a nibble. Its got to come out sooner or later so may as well go for broke. Maybe mushy up some pellets for him or do you have some baby food? I have seen others recommend that.

I have pureed pumpkin and I just gave him mushed up pellets with water because I’m afraid of him not getting enough liquids, he hasn’t knocked the tooth off yet, he is acting normal, he doesn’t understand why I’m so worried, he thinks he is getting a bunch of treats.

His regular vet is open for 5 hours tomorrow but I don’t think the exotic vet works sundays, maybe they can get her to come in, otherwise it will have to wait till monday, which sucks. I can’t believe there is only ONE vet in this entire area that will handle rabbits

Well….I got a pillow and blanket and put it in his pen to sleep for the night and while I was feeding him a leaf of lettuce before I went to sleep his hanging tooth got in his mouth and he spit out the tooth and yanked the lettuce leaf out of my hand and went back to eating. So now its completely out.

I have the tooth, its a pretty clean break with not much blood. I’m still going to try to get him an appointment asap so the vet can look him over, this was his week to get his teeth clipped anyways, I hope he doesn’t get an infection or abscess, etc. I hope he didn’t damage his nerves either

Sounds like he is doing OK. I would still book him in for the vet so they can remove the broken piece of tooth. He probably won’t need pain meds but atleast you can get them if you need them.

Thats good… He will be fine, you are probably suffering more than he is at the moment. You are doing everything right.

That’s scary!!! At least he doesn’t seem bothered by it.

How scary. So glad Roberta was there to help you through and that was a great link to Dana Krempels advice.  Amazing he doesn’t seem to have any discomfort and is acting normally. The fact he spit the tooth out and kept on eating shows he has adapted well to his teeth issues already. So that is a relief and buys you time to see a your regular rabbit-savvy vet. I think your worries of an abscess developing are valid and depending on how it looks at the gum, the vet may decide to give antibiotics as a cautionary measure. Keep us updated with what happens on Monday’s vet visit.

Oh no, how is he today. Definitely good to see his vet tomorrow even if you have to drop him off.

He is acting fine today, he is eating normal and running around and playing, I don’t think anything stops him, not even breaking off both his bottom teeth.

Update – Went to the vet today, she gave him a 2 week shot of antibiotics & trimmed his top teeth and smoothed out what was left of one of his incisors. She said his other tooth with the root exposed should grow back and that he would be fine and shouldn’t be in much pain since he is playing and eating/drinking normal.

YAY! I think Ouch with the root exposed, but the nerves may already be damaged or ??? from the way his teeth are so maybe that is why he doesn’t feel much pain. Either way, I am glad that he seems to no worse for the wear and is just fine.
