I must have the worlds pickiest buns. We have tried KMS (snubbed), Oxbow (timothy is awful on my allergies and they are not fond of the orchard), Sierra Valley (they do just okay with this hay, tends to have a lot of brown leaf. This is the only hay I have had half way decent luck with) and Sweet Meadow (hay smells great, but they all snubbed it!) Can anyone recommend any other places to order? I have 5 buns and 3 guinea pigs, so we go through a lot of hay.

Have you tried Orchard and Oat? Oat is definitely less dusty and easier on allergies. I don’t know what is best for guinea pigs..if they can have oat hays or not.

BB suggestions about different types of hay is good since it does not have to be timothy. Have you also tried American Pet Diner – 2nd cutting (gold)?

It’s too bad someone doesn’t sell a sampler of hays for picky bunnies to try.   BB….hint again…

We have tried orchard with Sierra Valley and Oxbow. That did not go over that well. We tried oat hay with Sierra Valley and they looked at me like “you want us to eat THIS?” Sarita, I have not tried APD yet. I just hate the cost to ship I wish Texas feed stores sold some good quality hay! Grrrr!

I agree about the shipping but I haven’t found anything locally that is very good. It does seem to come out with price and shipping pretty close to Oxbow or KMS…of course it’s been awhile since I’ve compared…

I have found some places offer free shipping if the order is large enough. You might check some chain pet stores or Amazon to see if they carry a hay that your bunnies like and then do larger orders less frequently to qualify for the free shipping.

APD 2nd cut Timothy hay is not bad at all. In fact, it doesn’t bother my allergies, and my picky girl loveeeeeeeeeeeeedddddddddddddd it.

You can get APD Timothy Gold in either a small bag or a 5 lb bag at Drs Foster and Smith. They seem to have the best shipping rates. They charge $5.99 for shipping for any order under $49. If it’s over $49, the shipping is free.

Another hay that my bunnies like is Zupreem Timothy. It’s always very soft, and not stalky. They unfortunately don’t have that at Drs. Foster and Smith. They sell it at Pet Food Direct and wag.com and other places.

What types of hay have you tried? I tried everything under the sun and eventually found out my bun only likes the Sierra Valley Oat hay, and he also will nibble on their alfalfa/orchard mix. The oat hay is wonderful, it hardly has any smell at all – I have horrible allergies and it doesn’t bother me at all. The alfalfa/orchard mix is quite dusty and sweet smelling.

Most companies have several types of hay (timothy, oat, alfalfa, orchard, with mixes of all of these) so once you isolate the consistency of hay they like, you will find something quickly from there. I know how frustrating it is to keep buying hay only to have it snubbed… keep trying and eventually you’ll find something. Hope this helps.
