Is this: http://www.petco.com/product/3050/P…itter.aspx okay to use in my rabbits litter boxes?  I think it would be cheaper than buying 3 bags of carefresh.  lol  Has anyone had any ill effects with it?  I think I heard it’s okay to use for buns but I want to be extra sure. I have only ever used carefresh.  I want to save some $$$ though.  I still have a lot of bedding left but this is for future reference.

How many of you use it?

I use Yesterday’s News in Frappe’s litter box. It works great!!! Make sure to get the unscented kind.

Ditto. I love YN. I save money by putting a thin layer of YN on the bottom of the litter pan, just enough to soak up the pee, and then put hay on top.

I really like YN and used it for a couple years.

I find that wood stove pellets work just as well and are cheaper, so with two rabbits I buy those instead, but YN is a great product.

Yesterdays News is great!! It absorbs pee GREAT!! And it keeps the smell away! I used Carefresh and it did nothing for the odor and I had to change it almost everyday cuz it wasn’t good at absorbing. And a whole bag of YN will last well over a month… I would say mine lasts close to a month and a half to 2 months, and I have 2 litterboxes for my bun.

yn’s is great, i also have used it in the past.
i was trying something new, currently was using just regular newpaper i shredded myself. kinda works too but does not help with odor, so because of that i am cleaning her cage everyday. guess i was being lazy, will be making my way to the petstore for some yn.
wish i knew how to make it, lol

Yesterday’s News works pretty well…they actually make a cat version and a rabbit version which is pretty much exactly the same thing, except the rabbit version is more expensive. So if you see both, just buy the unscented cat one and save yourself some money.

Like Elrohwen said, wood stove pellets are also a great idea. They’re even cheaper than Yesterday’s News and Carefresh, and work just as well if not better. Sometimes alternately sold as horse stall pellets, depending on where you are – just make sure there are no added chemicals or accelerants.

I used to use YN but since my buns have accepted hay in the litter box, they have also accepted Aspen wood pellets. So that is what I use now, since it is better at absorbing smells. But YN is a fine litter.

Thanks!! I will also look into wood stove pellets.

Where can I find wood stove pellets?  Anyone have any links?

If you live somewhere with a colder climate you might be able to find some at Home Depot etc. during the winter (I think…I live where it’s hot hot hot lol). Otherwise, try looking for some farm supply stores and ask them if they have horse stall bedding. Any brand will work as long as there are no accelerants or added chemicals.

Home depot/lowes carries them for wooden stoves sometimes, pet stores carry them under Feline Pine or Aspen Fresh (but expensive). Feed stores / tractor supply etc carry under horse stall bedding. If you can get the one for stoves without accelerant it’s the cheapest.

The link doesn’t work for some reason. Make sure to get the cat kind and not the small animal kind. The small animal kind is exactly the same but costs more for no apparent reason.
