Don’t know if anyone has mentioned this recently because I have been out of town for a few days – but the unbleached Carefresh now smells AWFUL. Apparently they changed their product!  I thought I just got a bad batch and went and got more at a different pet store and then tried buying it again at a Mom&Pop shop and it all smelled disgusting – like worse than rabbit urine.  (Yes – at this point I had 3 bags of gross smelling bags of Carefresh litter…)  I took two of the already opened packages back to Petco to ask if I could exchange it for something else and the worker told us that they changed their formula and have had a lot of people returning it lately.

Just wanted to give y’all a head’s up in case you were experiencing them same thing!

Oh, and it’s only the unbleached brown kind for some reason….I replaced it with the white and it’s fine.  Just unfortunate because I liked the ‘natural’ one better.

Yuck! I’m glad you returned it I’m the kind of person who says I’ll return something and then I don’t…then it’s money down the drain. And carefresh is expensive stuff!

It does seem different, thats for sure. Like theres wood fibers in there now that weren’t there before. Mine doesn’t smell bad though

Maybe it is wood fibre. I went to buy Aspen shavings at Petco recently, and they were selling a new shavings called Aspen&Wood shavings. I refuse to get anything that isn’t pure Aspen. It’s the only shavings wood I trust.

I used the white carefresh years ago. It was better for my allerges. Glad it is still being made. (They got into colors, scented, etc.)

Really? I just bought some natural carefresh about two weeks ago. (ordered it online because I bought in bulk) It doesn’t smell. I mean it has a carefresh smell but not a raunchy smell or anything? That’s weird.

I wonder if I got the last of the old batch? lol I don’t like the white stuff or the colored stuff, but if it is going to stink I am certainly not going to waste my money. And yes, carefresh is pretty pricey. I pay $45 for 3 bags online, but it lasts longer that way and I don’t have to go back every week to buy carefresh, which would add up to more.

Sucks that they changed their formula though. I am going to try and find a cheaper bedding that doesn’t stink. lol

Yeah, I’ll have to check when I go to buy more. If its all weird, I’ll go back to buying the white for a couple extra bucks. Monkey is rather picky about her toilet paper

I’ve been having trouble with even the bleached Carefresh for over a year now. The first time it smelled bad I wrote the company and they sent me a better smelling one. But now they all smell off. I’d definitely call it a chemical smell. Hopefully not something nasty like formaldehyde.
I get Kaytee comfort bedding mow, but I don’t know if I’ll stick with it. It’s just for Mimzy since the other two use Yesterdays News.

I would email the company. They need feedback to improve their product. Maybe they will change it back if they get enough complaints.
