Hey bunny friends.  I no longer have a TV as Murphy has eaten the wires.  I tried many things to get him to stop but he is clever and loves cable.  It’s annoying to me and dangerous for him! I saw the posts about water spraying (which I don’t want to spray water around my electrical areas….) but do you think the parfume suggestions could be applied to this or does anyone have specific advice for preventing wire chewing?  I appreciate it!

The best way to make sure your bunny doesn’t chew the wires is just to cover them up and make sure he can’t get to them. You can use a barrier to create a bunny-free zone behind your TV/entertainment system, and for those wires that are more out in the open (lamps etc) try finding some cord covers. It’s not only annoying for you when your electronics are ruined by bunny teeth, but dangerous for Murphy as well!

I’m with Peppypoo – cover your wires with individual wire protectors, or just block off the area. Wires are just too irresistible to a bunny and they’ll never understand why they need to stay away. Sprays and things can work on things like furniture or baseboards, but it would be impossible to cover every inch of every single cord and he would probably still use his teeth to test it out (and one nibble can go right through most cords).

It took a few hours, but once I had my tv, lamp and computer cords wrapped it was done. You can buy the plastic cord wrappers at Walmart (or Radio Shack) that is twisted. You get lots of feet of the stuff, then wrap it around and around each wire. It’s a pain, but only once, and will save you a huge expense and possibly dangerous problems for you and your bunny. Don’t spray moisture – you’re right about that.

Blocking off access with NIC cubes or just a clear sheet of thick acrylic that stands on the floor between the cords and access can really help. You can get sheets of acrylic cut to size at a hardware store. I use those in front of bottom bookcase shelves. I use NIC cubes around computer desks.

I was unaware of these “cord wrappers”. I will get some. Thank you. I certainly don’t want Murph to get hurt! I’m glad for this site. I called pet stores and they were clueless and unhelpful. Keeping them covered (I hide them under a big blanket and he seems to not know where they went) has worked for the most part, but while that works for the big coil of cable I haven’t been able to figure out what to do about the ones coming directly out of the TV or computer or lamp that a blanket won’t work with. I will hunt down these cord wrappers immediately!

I use the NIC grids to block off the entire area behind the tv. It is trickier with individual cords. You can buy cord protectors, or just buy some plastic tubing from the hardware store and cut down one side to make a slit, then put the wire in it.
