I am a totally new bunny owner, so I have tons of questions. My 12 y.o. daughter went to a local fair with her aunt, and they bought the bunny without even letting us know. We were completely unprepaired, didnt have proper setting, etc. We keep her indoors, and I bought a biggest possible indoor cage for her.

This one bothers me a lot. Bunny makes a lot of moaning sounds while she is sleeping. I’ve never seen her do that while awake. It sounds like she is in distress, but I am not sure what is going on. If I come to her she will immediately wake up and start jumping around and act like she normally does. She eats well, pees and poops regularly.

Does anyone know what it means?

I have had many rabbits that moan and snore while resting, so I would not worry about this. Some rabbits are more vocal awake and asleep than others.

The only time I’ve heard my bun make noise while asleep is when she is in a really deep sleep, sometimes she makes little snore sounds. But if I come over to look at her she instantly wakes up and jumps around (bunny instincts kick in)

I can’t tell from the picture in your avatar. Does she have a smooshed face? Depending on the position she’s in, it can cause some snoring sounds.

Uh oh, bad auntie! Sounds like bunny has a wonderful home anyways.

If shes acting normal and doesnt exhibit that sound when shes awake, I wouldnt worry about it. My lop makes little moans or grunts when hes flopped out on his side in a deep sleep.

I agree that it’s nothing to worry about. However, as a brand new bunny owner, I would find a good local vet (see links provided here, or check your phone book for Exotics) and get her a baseline check up. It’s important to do for many reasons. While there, you can mention the sounds. The vet will probably make sure she doesn’t have any respiratory problems.

Be sure to read all the info. sections of this site. It’s full of great basics that will help you get your bunny set up for a lovely life with your family. What’s her name?

Hard to tell with mine, Pepper, Piglet, Pipi and Blossom still sleep in a cuddle puddle, or a sleepy heap. Usually Bloss on the bottom and Pipi draped over somebunnies neck or back.

I am not sure if her face is smooshed. I looked at other bunnies photos and compared, and they seem to have longer noses. So I think is it smooshed. I’ll take some more pictures.

Bugz my ND makes groaning noises it is due to a skin flap on the back of his throat (yes I paid to make sure that was the reason even after the vet told me it was nothing to worry about!)

It is due to breeding and his flatter face. Anya does not do it and has the longer face and Rufus snores like a train and also has a flatter face.

Mine love being together except for Nermal who was adopted and returned. She lost the bond with her warren family and is arch enemies with Pipi at the moment otherwise they could probably all be together again. Blossom keeps try to hop the Xpen to play but Nermal is too skittish still and I can’t risk it so for now Nermal and Bloss will just have to say hello through the bars and she has one on one time with Daddy Piglet and Mummy Pepper when I can manage 100% supervision. Spay day approaches for everyone (except Piglet the only boy who is already fixed/ after fathering Pipi, Blossom and Nermal) hopefully we can do some serious rebonding once all the hormones settle down.
