My rabbit is disabled and today well checking him out I noticed his nail on his back paw was bleeding I cleaned the area with warm water and noticed the toe nail is cracked and curved to the side. Should I take kamdyn to the vet or just keep watching it? I did put cornstarch on the nail to stop the bleeding. thanks

Broken nails aren’t a big deal. My buns have broken claws more times than I can count. As long as the bleeding stopped, he doesn’t need to see a vet. If the quick (inner pink portion of the nail) is completely severed, you might want to try removing the whole nail – this seems to make the feet heal better. You can also clean out the wound with a bit of hydrogen peroxide and apply some Neosporin without pain reliever.

Watch him for signs of infection – redness, swelling, any odd lumps, etc. Also watch to see if his foot seems particularly painful after a day or two, since that could be a sign that he broke his foot.

I would trim off the cracked part of the nail so that it doesn’t snag on carpet or blankets. Basically trim any piece that might cause the rest of the nail to tear or catch on something, but don’t over trim or try to take away all the nail if it’s still attached to her toe. Just try to smooth it out as much as possible. I hope that makes sense. If the broken part of the nail falls off (or the whole nail) that is okay too, like Fluffybunny said you just want to be aware of the quick and make sure the nail is kept clean. I think whether it will grow back depends on the bun. Before I had my bun she had one of those cages with the wire bottoms and never had her nails cut so when I got her she had lost a few nails. 2 of them grew back perfectly fine and one continued to be this little stump of nail that I found never needed trimming and never came back in fully. The vet said that the nail bed had probably been badly damaged by the previous injury and would probably never grow back normally. But it never affected her, she never even seemed to notice. I would just keep an eye for infection. Healing vibes for Kamdyn!!!!

If a broken nail falls off, it should grow back just fine as long as there isn’t severe injury to the tissue. Like everyone said, just watch for signs of infection and he should be fine .

I came home from work all day and the part of the nail is just hanging there should I wiggle the nail to see if it comes off I don’t want to cut it because I might damage it. So if I clean the nail out with hydrogen peroxide is that going to hurt. Kamdyn is on pain medication because he is disabled. thanks when should I know if I should take him to the vet?

The nail was just hanging there so I gently pulled it away from the fur and it came off I am definately going to call the vet in the morning to get him seen. I am glad he is on pain medicine that way he isn’t in pain. Thanks again and keep praying for kamdyn!

When in doubt a vet visit is always best! I’ll keep my fingers crossed for Kamdyn for a quick recovery, keep us updated.
