I’ve got Jelly started on another round of pen G /procaine and the vet nurse gave me a couple 22’s to get me started. I dont know if these are the best gauge though. Those that have given these shots, what gauge did you find easiest? I need to order a batch.

I use 21G tips and 1cc/ml, I find these suck up the propercillin well and also are easy to get into Rufus skin. I only use them once as the second and third time I find it hurts him so them must dull the tip when you use them.

I’m pretty sure that’s the size I’ve used. What I have done in the past w/pen-g or any other injections is to keep one needle that I’ve drawn the medication up with and use it a few times and always use a fresh one that I haven’t drawn up from the bottle – I even find that the needle gets a bit blunt from the hard rubber that you have to draw it through to upload the meds.

Sarita I will try that with Rufus and see if I can then reuse needles.

Jerseygirl – like hot cakes! I mean you would never know there is an issue, he has been putting on so much weight that the vet now says I have to monitor what he eats to stop him getting FAT!

                  That’s great!

@Sarita, I remember you saying this before, about having one to draw and a new one to inject. Doesn’t the pen harden in the draw needle though between shots?

When I used to give the injections to Maian, it felt like it would harden in the needle, and sometimes even when the vet gave the injections, the needle would pop out of the syringe because of the pressure when we tried to inject. It made me nervous because:

                    A) It felt like I was giving a smaller dose because we lost some
                    and
B)I dont like the penicillin spilling even a drop near the bunnies.

Ive been using a bigger needle at work and it seems to have made a difference… the bunny isnt reacting to the jab, so I assume its ok…. and not too big…

You know Jersey, it’s been awhile since I did pen-g shots but I think after awhile it can because it’s part “powder” or at least it seems to be because you shake it up. After awhile you have to dispose of the needle to draw the medication anyway because it’s too blunt.

Angelic, just don’t reuse the needles to inject Rufus – I always toss those needles out and they only get one use with injections and sub-q fluids.
