I found a brand of kaytee hay that has peices of sweet potato in it. I was just wondering if that would be bad to give to bunnies all the time. I feel like having the dried food in there would up the calorie count too much, cause there was a ton of dried sweet potatoes in there. I didn’t even think you were supposed to give bunnies starchy things. I don’t really have a big variety of brands of hay to choose from, so I was a little suprised to find that on the shelves. I didn’t get it for Missy, but I was curious about it.

In general, anything with food bits in it is not good. They may be able to eat the food, but its much better to be able to moderate it, and those grab bags don’t give you the option. ts also much better to give fresh fruit/veggies rather than processed bits.

Unfortunately there’s a lot out there thats marketed for bunnies/small animals that is unhealthy or even toxic to them. It should be illegal

I with with SLH. I actually find that rather odd..sweet potato in hay? Good for you to go with your gut. Sweet Potato is a starchy veg, and should only be given as a very limited treat, but to be in a staple type of food like hay….I’m still feeling a bit baffled.

Definitely not. My biggest concern would be (like with trashy pellets), the bunny picking out the potato bits and not eating enough hay, which is of course vital for their digestive health.

Have you looked into ordering hay online? Prices are competitive and shipping isn’t bad at all.

I think having some things in the hay is fine if you find your rabbit to be picky or to encourage hay consumption as long as it’s stuff that is actually good for them…sweet potato while a treat in a very small amount is fine, it’s not what you would want to put in hay as a treat or to encourage consumption.

But definitely better to have just good old fresh hay for them.

I remember trying Kaytee hay once and deciding not to buy it again, but last year I happened to see a bag that was on sale for half price. It contained carrot bits and I thought I could mix a little into their regular hay, then I wouldn’t give them a daily baby carrot like I normally do. But after I opened the bag, I saw that the hay had way too many carrots. Some were hard and some were rubbery. I ended up picking out most of the carrots just so I could salvage some of the hay.

Other than Oxbow Botanical hay, from now on I’m sticking with plain varieties of hay that have no additional bits of food in them.

I make my own mixes for treats in the hay. I sometimes hide a few craisins in the hay I give them and they root through it to get the craisins. Or you can add things like dried herbs to the hay.

She’s not very picky aobut her hay, I think I’m more picky than she is lol. The kaytee hay really seems hit and miss. I had to sort through like 6 or 7 bags before I found one that looked good enough, the poeple in the store probably thought I was nuts inspecting all thier hay lol. I’ll have to look into ordering online. I’m spending the summer then possibly moving to ontario with my boyfriend so I’m wanting to find a good brand that I can still get up there. I’ll definitely not be getting her hay with anything added to it. I thought it looked sketchy anyway. I do hate how there will be bags of pellets that have seeds and dried fruit mixed in and on the bag it says that its a complete diet and all your rabbit needs. I wish they wouldn’t sell things like that.

I feel the same. I was in the store buying some bird food the other day and they had SEED STICKS labeled as a rabbit treat. I was like “really? a seed stick?” *sigh*

When you move you can look around to see if there are any farm/feed stores as well, horse quality timothy hay is cheap from there and works fine for buns!
