One of Wilbur’s nails looks like it’s a black stump, maybe like it had broken off or something. I don’t know really what I should do if she broke a nail. I tried to get some pictures but it’s hard to pick up on the camera. And to make matters worse I hit a quick for the first time and I feel awful. I think I’m going to have the vet trim their nails now, it’s not worth the stress and fear that I’ll do something wrong.

Nova has a nail like that. It has been like that for years now. When I first got her she was missing quite a few nails, probably from being overgrown on wire floors. They just got caught and ripped out. All but one of her nails ended up looking like that before they grew back in normal. The one that never grew back normal is on her back foot. Is is thinner and darker than the other nails. It needs to be trimmed about half as much as the other nails.
So I think you should be good at this point. Nova’s toes got all puss filled before the nail popped through to the surface, but since the nail is through, she should be just fine.

It likely broke off -it’s not a big deal Just keep an eye for infection of course but certainly it looks like it happened a while ago and it’s no big deal

How far off does the black go? Is it the entire nail or just part way?
