My 8mo old girl, Cinnabun, was spayed this past Wednesday. She’s back to eating, drinking, and even playing around a bit. But so far there hasn’t been much of a change in behavior. She still grunts at me sometimes. And worse, she seems extra shy around me now. Runs when I want to pet or pick her up. If she ever behaved like that before surgery, it was minimal. Is this just part of her recovery? When do the hormones work themselves out–everything I read keeps saying that once a bun has been spayed they become overly affectionate and a hunny bunny. She’s not biting or lunging at me…just seems like she doesn’t want to be held. I miss snuggling.

It can take a couple weeks for behavior changes to take place. First, there’s a surge of hormones after the spay that needs to settle down. Second, plenty of naughty behaviors can also be age related, so she may just need to mature a bit more and settle down.

Also, the vast majority of bunnies hate to be held. Babies are often cuddly, but once they mature they decide they’d much rather be on the ground. Instead of feeling bad that she doesn’t want to be held, get down on her level and snuggle with her there.

She also may be a bit sore and so it may not feel comfortable for her to be picked up which may have her shying away.

Give her some time, and I agree with Elrohwen, get down on her level and snuggle with her. If she still runs away, then just hang out on the floor, have a few treats ready for her when she comes over.

I’d give her some time, and then some more time Then work at making hanging out a pleasant time. Rabbits don’t really like to be held down, so snuggling can be something hard for them to do. You could start by sitting and letting your bunny come up to you for treats, and then a few pets and a treat and so on.
