I dropped my rabbit off today to have his teeth all grinded down ( his bottom incisor has already grown too long & I think the top might have started to bother him ) and he was having a difficult time eating his vegetables and would just sit next to his bowl and stare at them unless I ripped them up and handed them to him. They are going to be grinding down the top & bottom instead of just clipping the bottom ones.

The vet called me to tell me what time it would be done and to let me know he is okay and nibbling on hay while he waits and asked if I had any pain meds for him and I was just wondering if they usually need them after a grinding?

I asked her if she thought he would and she said she wouldn’t know until she did the procedure because it depends on what she has to do.

i would get pain meds. tooth trims are uncomfy, and he may not want to eat after if he is in pain.

When Peppy used to have her teeth trimmed (they grew back normally after a while, thank goodness!) we never got any pain meds for her. I imagine that regular incisor trimming would not require pain medications…the bunnies are usually lightly anesthetized for the procedure due to discomfort and stress, but no actual living tissue is damaged.

I always use them for the first day or so. I think it’s a good idea to have them on hand. I say, better safe than sorry.

I would get pain meds in case he needs it – I know even getting a tartar build up taken off my tooth made my mouth sore, can’t imagine what having your teeth actually grinded feels like. Doesn’t cost much and in case there is pain, or refusal to eat, you would have it on hand.

Hm guess I’m the minority opinion..in any case pain meds definitely can’t hurt (pun!). Peppy never seemed particularly bothered by the trims and had absolutely no problem with appetite so I never thought to give her meds for the procedure; my vet never mentioned them either.

Thanks! I guess I will get some if she says he needs it. I wish his teeth would grow back normally, he is only about a year old and only recently has had teeth problems and its really strange because I would have thought it would have shown up when he was younger according to what I’ve read.

I definitely think it varies Peppypoo. I don’t give Bobby pain meds and he bounces right back. Other rabbits I have (had) don’t seem to bounce back as quickly.

Kinggoblin, most of the time dental problems show up later unless it’s very significant maloclussion.

Back from the vet, he did fine, the vet said he didn’t need pain meds but gave me critical care and told me if he doesn’t eat to mix it with baby food and force feed him. They gave him some critical care after he woke up some time between 4-5. He is still groggy right now and wants to be left alone, I offered him some banana baby food but he just turned his nose and jumped in his pop up hidey cube with hay and laid down.

I put a plate of vegetable in his pen, if he doesn’t eat on his own when should I try to force him to?

I would say if he didn’t touch the vegetables overnight that you should feed him the critical care.

So to clarify you didn’t take any pain meds home?
