So I had a thought the other day that it might be helpful to people who are new to house rabbits or struggling making the “right” litter box to have a picture reference of litter boxes and details to help them. It took me several months to perfect my litter box with my bun so I’m hoping this might help other people cut to the chase.

So here is my buns (primary) box in his condo:

I use compressed newspaper pellets (yesterdays news- UNSCENTED) with carefresh over top (my bun has sensitive hocks). Then I put hay in the other side. I line my boxes with newspaper for easy removal and cuz Bunjamin likes to shred the paper.

I use a litter box with a removable high side because my bun was peeing over the box:

And this is something I like to call “bunny optional”:

BBers, please add pics and details about your litterboxes too. I think it’ll help (you can always tell me if I’m crazy )

It took a while to figure out what she wanted. Untrianed and outdoor cage kept she came to me at

13 months with one litter under her belt when she was 9mo.  but she is perfectly satisfied now

and is the most consistant one of my 3.

Good idea! I have a small collection of plastic containers that were failed litterbox trials…it would have been great to know from the beginning what the best options were .

I’ll try to see if I can get ahold of a picture later, but I use a medium-sized cat litterbox much like yours, with wood stove pellets covered by a wire grid and a big pile of hay on top.

Thanks Peppypoo! I think that would be a good idea to have some pictures of litter boxes with grids since a lot of people prefer those too.

I don’t think you’re crazy at all, though I can’t speak for others… Seriously though, this is one thing that often troubles people with rabbits so I think the thread is a great idea.

I cannot count the number of litterboxes I bought over time. lol Not all were specifically made to be litter boxes either. Some of the best ones are actually storage boxes or plastic tubs.
When I had just one rabbit, I used various things as a grid over the litter. Jersey actually adapted to all the changes I made without trouble. Which is actually ironic now because she has terrible habits now but it’s not related to the type of boxes I use.

I’ll attach some picture of the ones I currently use later. At the moment for Jelly and TimTim, I use a deep rectangular tub lined with newspaper and hay. It has been the simplest thing and they like it. It does require daily cleaning though. I’m using regular cat boxes for the fosters with same, newspaper and hay. This however has been messy! The boys dig and tear up the paper. They poo everywhere too. I’m, positive it’s due to hormones. The girls currently aren’t as messy….yet. Anyway, they all pee in the box at least.

Jersey and Rumball have a couple. A deep box I use wood pellets in with a grate over top. It’s a plastic grid I cut out of a bread crate. The other big box they have is actually a tiered storage rack that had missing compnonents. It has solid base and a flat grid type part that fits over the top. I line the base with a garbage bag for easy cleaning. I don’t recommend that for everyone though. I wouldn’t use it for any of the others either. It’s just I know J&R dont and have not ever tried tear at or eat the plastic.

                  An older pic of that.

Here we go! The screen is pretty much just a sheet of chicken wire bent at the corners so it forms a [ shape and supports itself above the litter…if that makes sense, haha.

Thanks peppypoo! You’re right, are boxes look very similar in design- just different with the screen.

If we get more references, maybe BB will pin this so new people will always be able to see it

Such a great idea!!! I have a large collection of failed litter box ideas as well as failed hay box ideas.

Lazee, could you post a picture of your hay container and tell us a little bit about it? I love that it fits so perfectly in your litterbox and your bunny can eat it nicely without spilling it everywhere.

Jersey, I love that bread box thing with slats!

haha, I have fails too. I did a big hay rack made with NIC grids and cardboard one time. Jersey, pulled all the hay out the bottom as soon as I rigged it up. And she doesn’t even eat hay!

The litter box one of those storage shelf things. Similar to this. except the bottom on mine was solid.

I also use tubs I just got in a variety store.

The other ones I use is bottom part of hooded litter box with the piece of bread crate grid in it. (see below) I sometimes keep the hood on.

btw, that’s Rumball in the box, in the bath tub. I carried him there in it for a fur plucking session. He was going through a huge molt.

That’s genius with the storage shelf things! I’m going to try it if I find one that is cheap (or with a bread tray).

Personally, the standard cat litterbox is absolutely unsatisfactory for me.  The walls are too low, they aren’t big enough for my bun to stretch out, and they don’t adequately contain the mess. My bunny is only an average sized satin (about 6-7 pounds), so if you have a bigger bun I’m sure you are silently cursing the messy situation at home from the standard cat litterbox!  In fact, I’m going to start a revolution against cat litter boxes for bunnies!

My litterbox is a rubbermaid toughneck that’s about 24X16X8 with a small hole cut out on one side ($5 at home depot).  I have a small soap rack ($1)  that I hung into drilled holes so that her veggies are also off the floor.  The litterbox is next to the poster tube hay racks that some of y’all have recently seen.

This set up keeps her VERY happy.  She’s got privacy and security, can turn around, lay down, and eat in her litter cage.  Most importantly it keeps her daddy happy.  If she keeps her dad happy, she’ll not be grounded…buahahahaha!  semi jk

There is just something about your bunny that makes me melt! lol This is what finally worked, after trying the corner boxes, and I had to make a screen for it so she stopped digging all night long. Molly’s hay rack is up to the left, but I don’t think you can really see it in the picture.

That is a great idea. I actually bought 1 litterbox for bunny and it has worked out. When my 1 rabbit became disabled I tried a number of litterboxes till I found the one that worked. I spent alot of money and time!

This is a great idea FrankieFlash!  As what may work for one person will not work for another.  We may each have a different routine, different bunny personalities, and litter box habits, etc that may require different types of litterbox options!

There are also the covered litterboxes that some people like.   Some bunnies are a bit shy with those since the covered boxes only have one opening, (many bunnies like multiple escape routes) but we have had members whose bunnies love them.

In the store we have a litterbox screen kit which is good for people who want to save more litter.  The screen is also meant to be dumped daily — making it easier to keep a clean box, and clean bunny feet. . See the video

Litterbox Screen Kit (made with galvanized metal to prevent corrosion as bunny urine can be pretty darn corrosive).

Here’s the video of how it is supposed to work:

I actually have the Binkybunny litterbox because before I was using lighting diffuser as a grid and it was SO HARD TO CLEAN! it worked pretty well otherwise. The BB one is a lot easier to clean. And it works really well. The reason I need a grid is because fern loves digging the litter when there isn’t a grid.
I’m sorry I don’t really have a picture of the old one or the BB one, but BB above has a pic of the BB one so thats the one I have Ill take a pic of how my hay rack is set up at some point.

My college has free newspapers during the fall and spring so I pick up 2 every day, rip it up and use that as litter. It works pretty well. Now that its summer though, I don’t get those papers. I need to find the wood pellets but none of the stores here seem to sell them. I can’t find any online either (mostly because I am not 100% sure what I am looking for). Where do you all find yours?

standard cat boxes work great for my bunnies. But when the largest of the 4 is just shy of 4lbs, they don’t need anything bigger And I think 10 of Monkey could fit in one comfortably lol.

Here is pictures of my litter box setup. I have two litter boxes side by side with a hay rack connected behind it. It is a hay rack on a stand and I zip-tied the legs to the NIC grids. Here is a post I made about my new hay rack so you can see more pictures/info here: https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/120425/Default.aspx

it keeps the hay from getting all over as well.

If you have a free range rabbit and can’t attach the legs to anything, this hay rack would work great against a wall and wouldn’t be able to move around! (sorry it is blurry)

I want to buy a Binkybunny litter screen So that I can start using the poop in my garden, but don’t have the money at the moment. I had bought two a while ago but bought the wrong size and it is to small.

I LOVE the wood stove pellets and doubt I’ll ever use anything else! They’re like 5 bucks for a 40lb bag and last over a month!

Hi! I think it’s a great idea you’re using for the litter box. Lots of people are doing the same concept today with the hay rack in the litter box so they can eat while going to the bathroom.I have one rabbit Buster and he loves newspaper litter the best, you seem like an expert, so hopefully you can answer my question. Buster loves chewing on everything…including his newspaper, he rips it up and drags it all over the cage so by the end of the say it looks the paper boy crashed into the cage spilling all his newspapers, but if I change the litter he won’t go in the box! please help! WHAT DO I DO?! Can’t clean the cage everyday, its too frustrating! Please respond! Thank you!!

I use newspaper in my litter box and bunjamin likes to rip it too but when I make my box, I line it with newspaper and then use recycled newspaper pellets (Yesterdays news- unscented, sold at pet supplies and meijer, etc) and I fill it up about an 1 inch- 1.5 inches thick. This weighs down the paper making it impossible for him to pull the whole sheet out. If I Was in your position I would try this and sprinkle some shredded newspaper on top to trick him and then eventually ween him off needing the extra newspaper. You could also try adding a phonebook (with covers taken off) as a toy to his cage. It’ll make a mess but it won’t have poo and pee on it and it might distract him from the paper in his litterbox.

So I guess you should protect it better because if he’s able to eat it, he’s probably able to touch it as well. :/

For my rabbits I’m using a simple, but very big, plastic litterbox with pellets.

Typically most big companies use the toxic inks for colored/glossy pages and soy for the rest. You do have to research though as some inks contain arsenic.

I need to get a picture of my litter box setup… it’s quite weird. lol Stickers has to have a litter box on TOP of a jumping platform, so she can get her privacy away from Powder while she goes potty (he doesn’t jump much). So I have two on the floor and one up a few feet in the air.

The outer bin is one of those roll-under-the-bed containers (see the blue wheel, back left).  It helps contain hay and some of the flying poopies.  The litterbox is a covered cat box with the top removed (they didn’t like the one entrance).  The hay rack is made out of a small litterbox with a wire paper tray ziptied on the bottom then a bungie cord to hold it up.  It seems to work well for them.

Although my bun does not like anything tied down and it’s usually more of a mess to try that with him

Oh or get a bigger litter box so it’s harder for them to move.

After a large cat little box with poops being left near the bowls, to the litter box in a coroplast box with the bowls also in the coroplast box(with poops in between the litter box and the bowls), to this!

I think I solved my poop problem haha.  He has done extremely well with this, he does all his business in it, but he does leave a stray one or two poops during free-range time in my room.Unlike with the other two setups I tried before which resulted in poops in the pan and poops near the bowls.I figured a way I could have them all in one place.

I did refill his hay after the picture. c:

I have questions! the screen is mainly to separate the poop from the urine correct? (I saythat because I saw the BB hay and rack video)Or is it to separate the hay from any type of the droppings?

Something that always confused me was when I would see hay ALL OVER people’s litter boxes. This was confusing to me becauseI do not see why the whole box should be covered if the bunny will eliminate in it. Wouldn’t it be bad to eat urine covered hay?

When Santa gave us bunny, bunny came with litter that is actually for hamsters.  It is SuperPets Potty Litter for small animals.  Not Critter Litter. (This litter is much smaller)  I tried the Critter Litter that is sold at our local pet store for bunnies & she doesn’t seem to like it as much.   The Super Pet Potty Litter clumps & I read not to use clumping cat litter & not to use clay.  This clumps & has clay. On the cover is says it is for hamsters, gerbils & other small animals.  I don’t want to use anything that is like bedding b/c we want to litter train her  with a litter box & it seems to be going well.

I’m so new to rabbit care that I feel like I’ve jumped in the deep end of the pool with no idea how to swim. But I’m learning. However, I’m so stumped on one thing and I haven’t found an explanation. I’m curious why the bunnies seem to enjoy pooing, peeing, and snacking all in one spot. I just assumed, like dogs and cats, that Stu wouldn’t want to eat in the same place he potties, but I see everyone has great success with hay boxes (which I need) and even the food/water dish inside the litter area (the yellow box setup is super awesome!). So I’m just wondering why the bunnies prefer an all-in-one setup. Being able to rationalize it in my head or to my husband is easier than just saying, “Well that’s just the way they work.”

The litterbox is a work in progress at my house (currently, a cardboard Bates boot box with CareFresh and shredded plain paper). I know this isn’t a long-term solution and I’m heading to the store first thing tomorrow to pick up a permanent litterbox (LOVE the storage tub with the hole in the side — might steal that idea!), a matching food and water bowl (Stu absolutely will not use a licker waterer), and hay. But before I go, I’d like to try to figure out why they like the one-stop-shop model over separate food/water and toilet idea, so I can better plan.

                                                                                                    Thanks all!

I think the differences from cats and dogs pretty much comes back to rabbits being a prey species. Also, despite many thinking their toileting where they eat seems an unhygienic habit, they are actually quite clean in their habits. In the wild they spend majority of time in the burrow. At dawn and dusk they venture out to the feeding range. I think it’s because they are efficient that they also toilet then. They are active then as this is when light is low and they are less likely detected by predators. So they are have limited time to eat their fill and toilet so as not to soil the burrow later. I also read one time that it is a way to fertilize their feeding ground also.

So for the domestic rabbit, I believe the hay filled litter tray becomes the feeding ground where they forage. They also create latrines in the wild where majority if toileting takes place. Our “litter training” is really about providing a set up that takes advantage of their natural habits.

Maybe its to do with proportions, hay being the bulk of what they eat. Their bodies know they need to empty out to fit more in? Lol

The pelleted wood is processed more then chips and shavings and this removes much of the aromatic oils that cause irritation. Some very sensitive rabbits might still react to wood pellets but many do well on them. Also, the rabbits aren’t living on them 24/7 so that helps.
The covered litterboxes really depends on the rabbits. I use them in some areas and mine are ok with them. Again, rabbits being a prey species, I believe sometimes if there is an aversion to covered boxes it is because they may feel more trapped. They seem to feel more secure with more then one escape route and covered litterboxes only offer the one entry/exit. It also limits their vision.

I don’t want to use anything that is like bedding b/c we want to litter train her with a litter box & it seems to be going well.

We just found a great litter box called the Litter Gitter. For a long time, we had two normal litter boxes for hay and litter with a standard wire mesh with an electrical tape cover on the edges that sat on top of the paper pellet litter that we use. But our boy found that he was an expert at digging out the mesh and then digging out the hay and pellets to a glorious result. This litter box design doesn’t let him do that, and it’s easy to clean the plastic insert between standard cleanings because you can see the dirty parts. I also feel better knowing that they aren’t digging in the dirty stuff underneath, since they can’t get to it. As an added bonus, I recently modified an IKEA cabinet into a two section hay box for them, and it fits almost perfectly into it. The previous boxes were shorter, and the extra few inches is nice to have.

It’s the IKEA Besta shelf unit with glass doors. I made a hole in two of the side walls and felted over the cutouts. Hinged one of the shelves for the ramp and stapled a cotton rug cutout to it. Also used part of the rug on the walkthrough shelf. I have recently bought two new litterboxes for Bosse! His previous one was getting really cramped, plus I wanted him to have one litter box in his cage and another one in the livingroom/kitchen area. For his comfort and for myself so I wont have to change it as often, lol

                                                                                                                          Some photos from earlier tonight.

The two new ones. The one on the left he’s had for a few days, and the other one was bought today. They are the same but I forgot to get the white top for the first one .

The old one is smaller, and it slopes inwards towards the bottom. The new ones fits a newspaper perfectly, whilst with the old one we would have to fold the newspaper etc. to make it fit.

I am currently just using a small dishpan type set up and waiting for my screen to arrive from Binkybunny! (any day now – maybe even today!) I have two litter boxes that I rotate to save time in the morning and keep her clean until the screens arrive. I give her a fresh box before bedtime and first thing in the morning. I’m hoping that she will continue her near-perfect bathroom habits well into the future! (currently only 12-13 weeks old). I set up her hay at one end to encourage her into the box and put her veggies on the hay. However, I would like to consider a set up like the Yannikin shared – I love the soapdish veggie rack and hay filled paper towel tubes! What ingenious ideas!

What a mess! I’ve been using a garbage bag to wrap the entire litter box. Makes cleanup real easy.

I have found that if I take a large garbage bag and put the litter pan in it about half way, tip out everything and tap the bottom, nearly all of it dumps in cleanly before I even have to wash or wipe it down. BB’s new scooper she’s selling in the store works very well for scraping out the final bits, then a rinse, a water/vinegar rinse, and a rinse again gets it super clean.

The wire mesh I made is 20 x 13.75 inches. Should fit nicely once there’s litter in it. This is to make it easier for them to get in and out. The box is Agree RG155 Table-Top Gardener Portable Potting Tray. Nice quality, rounded edges.

I used to have a corner litter-box, and while she’d use it consistently, her butt would hang off the edge and make a mess in the rest of the cage. I recently just switched to another litter-box; I bought it about a year ago, but realized it was a bit big for her cage. However, I’m switching her cage out for a condo this month, and wanted to start the transition slowly. So the first aspect of her habitat to change is her litter-box. (As well as the relocation of her hay racks, so that they’re next to the box.)

I bought a litter-box for ferrets, because the cat litter-boxes seemed really bulky, and they just looked enormous on her (she’s 4 pounds). Also, ferrets apparently have peeing habits that require them to have high walls, which I wanted for eliminating any opportunity for her butt to hang off the edge. This box also features an easy-to-access entry, wide and low. I’m surprised no one’s mentioned ferret litter-boxes here yet! Though this one may be a bit small for a medium-sized rabbit.

So I added it to his house that we built, and guess what? Yes, it is now his toilet! Dam extravagant toilet!
I love your ferret litter tray – but we don’t have ferrets here (or not that I know of?), ha ha hah! Isn’t it amazing that once something is labelled – as much as it may be perfect for another use, it is not suggested, & passed on. Such a shame – I’m sure that was way cheaper than a $70 carrier???

lol, a carrier would make for a very fancy and expensive litter box. XD My litter box was a bit cheaper than a litter box for cats, but was more expensive than the corner litter box I was using before. I don’t quite remember the exact cost anymore, but it was something like $12 – $20.

And yes, it’s odd! It’s also funny that a lot of products that are labeled as “for rabbits” aren’t always the best you could get for them. For litter, I actually use a cat litter called Yesterday’s News. I believe someone who posted earlier on this thread mentioned that they also use it.

Me… I still use the newspaper, catalogues and the best part – my mail ‘shredded’! Some people have a sign up saying ‘no junk mail’ – not me! Ha ha hah! When I get low, I have considered pinching the neighbours??? Tooo funny!

i have a couple questions in reference to the litter box at first loki seemed to have issues litterbox training i bought one of the corner ones they sell and he would either ignore it or sleep in it but never poop. i then tried a cardboard box shaped like a cat litter that he just ate, in the end when i moved him into his own room i found he would just go back to his cage to poop so when i created his new encloser i just took the top off his cage and used the bottom as a litter he is doing very well but i noticed he uses just a small corner of the bottom of the old cage as a litter so i would like to transfer him to a smaller box maybe a large catlitter box or something but i am afraid to mess with success he is very good about using what he has now for his litter am i crazy to want to change? i just figure a smaller litter box would give him more room in his encloser.

my other question is what do you all use in the litter? shavings? or other things? and if shavings are there good and bad kinds? like i noticed ( i think i could be wrong) pine , ceder, etc etc

one last question i noticed a lot of you have hay and some even their food in the litterbox or right next to it … why? its seems kind of gross to have him eating hay he could have pee’d on lol sorry if thats a stupid question as i mentioned in other places on this board i am a very new rabbit mommy and learning as i go thanks so much in advance—heather

Rabbits really like to eat as they poop, it’s not gross and they won’t eat what they pee on. Their digestive systems are just always going so most prefer to have something to chew on as they go!

You may have more success by giving him some hay in the litter box, that’s how I trained mine to go in there. I always feel it is really important to give the rabbits access to hay in their litter box. But then I have seen some rabbits who have no interest in eating as they poop, every rabbit is different but I know mine love it

You are best to avoid wood shavings because they can be dusty and some are bad for rabbits, not sure what as I’ve never considered using them so haven’t researched. A favourite of everyone seems to be recycled paper pulp. But someone with more knowledge on wood shavings/pellets can chip in here.

If he is going in the cage base but you want to change that then you can try removing the cage entirely and putting the new litter tray exactly over the spot where he would pee, and fill it with litter and some hay above it or on half of it. You could put some of his poops/pee soaked litter in the box so he can smell it. I know with mine once they got the idea of the box then I was able to easily swap different boxes in and out and they would just hop in because it was in the same place. Now I can even move the boxes around and they go wherever the box is!

                                                                                                                                                      Hope that helps!

I thought I’d share this for anyone who has a big bun — this is what we chose for our Flemish Giant, Bumble. There are two compartments on the end, meant for litter scoops, but we stuffed them each with a different kind of hay, and it worked out brilliantly! It’s a bit more of a hop to get in and out, so probably not great for smaller buns, but for Bumble it was perfect. He wasn’t a particularly huge Flemish– only about 10lbs at his biggest.

He usually kept it very tidy.. this photo was taken mid-dig, during his “Breakfast now! Breakfast now or I dig!” phase, right around when we changed the clocks in the Spring. Bunny does not conform to silly human time changes!

Anyhow, I definitely love this box for bigger buns, and it was less than $20 on Amazon! Litter box and hay rack, alll in one!

I’m just starting on litter-training Chito and there’s some questions I’d like to ask about litter brands? I don’t know whether I’m supposed to put this here or not, Mod, if I’m wrong please scoop my butt and carry me where I belong :3

Rabbits isnt the most common pet in my country and we’re so far down here, so it’s kinda hard to get the recommended brands such as Carefresh or Yesterday’s News, and even if there is, it would be terribly expensive. So, yeah, my question is whether anyone had an experience with Marukan brand of wood shavings and are they safe or not, and Vitakraft Vegetal Clean Blue, too. I also found Oxbow Eco Straw but it’s almost twice the price. Can anyone help? Thank you so much!
