I noticed last week that one of Goblins bottom front teeth was a little longer than the other, tonight I noticed that it has grown even longer. I am calling the vet tomorrow for an appointment to have them looked at. He is still eating, drinking and acts fine. He doesn’t appear to be drooling or anything, but ugh.

How much does a tooth trim usually cost? I just want to brace myself ((((  He is probably close to 1 yr old now and never had an issue before now.

I’m sorry I can’t say, since it may vary from vet to vet. If you have VPI pet insurance (and I’d recommend it before this becomes a pre-existing condition) you could look up on their payment statement sheet which lists procedures and what they reimburse. You could try that anyway, I just don’t know if you need to be a member to access that pdf.

Is it an incisor? I’ve only had rabbits with molar problems. It’s always good to have their teeth checked and hopefully it’s nothing major.

Procedure prices vary widely – I would call and ask the vet’s office directly, that is going to be your very best bet as far as costs.

I called this morning and his appointment is tomorrow, its his lower left incisor, it just started growing a lot faster than the rest the last 2 weeks it seems, last night I couldn’t believe how much longer it had gotten, last week I could barely tell.

He’s still eating his hay and chewing on willow so its just weird how fast it grew.

It may not be growing straight.

My rabbit’s incisors started growing uneven when she had an abscess beneath one of the teeth. Because of the pain associated she chewed more with one side and it got worn down faster than the other. No change in eating habits.

Personally, I would get an x-ray or at least have the vet do a thorough check around the jaw. Hope everything turns out fine.

Back from the vet….. Apparently he has a minor malocclusion. She only had to trim his bottom teeth this time, she says next time I notice they are getting to this size again, drooling, or not eating then they will put him under to float all his incisors. The top ones aren’t an issue right now.

At least it was only $74 ( it probably would have been less but I wanted his nails done too while we were there ), I was expecting it to be $125+

Hopefully he doesn’t have to have it done that often…. considering he was almost a year old before there was any sign of teeth issues.

Eventually as rabbits age and they lose bone density they will be more likely to have dental problems. So that is something to keep in mind for when he gets older especially since he already has malocclusion.

It’s great that he’s ok! Crazy that it was $74. When I would get my rabbit’s top teeth trimmed I only had to pay something like $34. I thought that was a tough! Was it more this time because of the check up fee, or will it always be $74 for the trim?

There was a physical exam fee, now that they know what it is I don’t think I will be charged it every time

That is cheap in my part of the country. You may be charged an exam fee but it may not be for a full exam depending on how long it was since he was last seen.

Yeah, I thought it was cheap considering, but I can’t really be picky because she is the only exotics vet in my city, I would have to drive out to the country to the only other I know of and they were more expensive than this one is.

My tooth trims cost about $200.00 – that is the molars but I imagine it wouldn’t be less with the incisors.

I just looked over the treatment/receipt paper, the tooth trim is only $27, but the office visit was $35 and the nail trim was $12

my bun has had a pretty rough time with malocclusion. he has had his incisors fixed at the vet maybe 3 times. they charge $50 per visit.

unfortunately malocclusion can be frustrating because if it isn’t corrected properly, the rabbit will still be uncomfortable chewing… which means the teeth will continue to grow unchecked. wesley cracked one of his incisors and had to have most of it removed. as a result, one peg tooth came in very crooked, and he did not want to chew anything so the rest of his teeth suffered as well. things have finally evened out though, thank goodness just be sure to check it frequently, as it isn’t always a one-time fix!
