        Hi,

I have a female Holland Lop and she is about 8 months old. The past few days she has been making this quite sound that i can only think to describe as grunting. She does it when i sit on the ground with her and she runs around me hopping on my lap and seems really happy; However, i have never heard these sounds from her before. I read about males making a buzzing/grunting sound when they are feeling sexual. I’m not even sure this is that same sound…what does it mean?

It may be what is called honking. It is a quiet sound that bunnies do make when they are happy, so your interpretation is correct.

She does need to be spayed now, but that’s separate from the noise. She will still make it after she’s spayed when she is happy. Sammykins does. Some bunnies can become quite vocal as they feel more bonded with you and secure in their homes.

I watched some videos of rabbits making honking sounds, after you suggested that it might be what my bunny is doing, and that is exactly what Bella does . I’m so glad to know that it is a normal sound, she had me very worried that something was wrong. Now that I know what it is i hope she doesnt stop doing it because its rather cute! Thanks for the input and I do plan to get her spayed very soon.

It could definitely be hormonal – girls do it as well as boys.

It could also just be excitement. My girl honks/grunts when she’s running up to me for treats or is eating veggies. Some bunnies are just more vocal than others 🙂
