Kind of wish my rabbit was a girl so I’d not have to do this.

I just may take him to the vet to have it done but…. how do we know when to start checking? And do they have to have it done by us/vet? Can healthy males do it themselves? Why do we have to do it? (Why as in what are the reasons for having to do this?)

Oh I’m so new at this stuff.  and now after reading, I’m scared of the smell. I have a VERY sensitive stomach and don’t think Bunnehhhh Bean would appreciate me losing my lunch over his fur

OH yeah. HOW do you even open those things?

The Bunny Info section above has a section on cleaning anal glands which should be helpful to read.
Also, I’m going to read another post near yours that is on anal gland cleaning, so you might want to read it too, in case BB’s reply there is mutually helpful.

There’s another post on this in the Diet & Care section right now.

My short answer is – I’ve been told by multiple vets that it’s not necessary to do. Some people do it and some rabbits might really need it, but both of mine have been clean each time they’ve seen a vet so I don’t bother.

Also, both male and female rabbits have anal glands – it’s not gender specific.

I just asked this question a few days ago. I just cleaned my females out the other day I had a cup of warm water and qtips dip the qtips in the water and just open up the anal gland and clean it out. if there are some stuff in there. I do this in a room my rabbit is comfortable in and she is a little bit nervous so it was easy to clean it!
