         Please help!

When I was cleaning my bunny’s cage today I noticed a white thing stuck under the cage wall (she has one of those homemade, C&C grid cages) and I got it out and it was a torn claw! I looked at her foot and sure enough one of her nails was torn off by her cage! I feel so terrible and I’m wondering if there’s anything I should do. I don’t know when it happened but its clotted and she is acting totally ok. That nail was so stuck under there and it was a huge piece that was torn off if not the whole nail. I feel so bad for her and know she must have been so scared and in so much pain.

It looks like the entire nail was torn off. Like, I can see white broken nail around the base, and there is dark red/ black thing sticking out of the torn nail. I think it may be the quick?? Its not bleeding right now or anything and I don’t know if I should try and clean it or just leave it alone and let it heal. Anybody dealt with this before??

This has never happened with her cage before and she’s had this nice homemade cage for like three years, ever since shortly after I got her. I’ve never noticed any incidents during this entire time period with her nails…

I would give the vet a call, you don’t want it to get infected. Poor bunny!

Sounds like it was a freak accident, but I would check over the area that you found the nail to see if there is anything you could do to cover it up.

I discovered a torn nail on my bun Smudge just after I brought her home. I took her to the vet and they had me dampen a paper towel or clean cloth and just dab it gently it over the torn nail to clean away anything that might get picked up from the cage. I did this a few times a day usually morning and night for a few days. I was also able to use a little dab of the plain polysporin to keep away infection and such. For Smudge her nail never grew back properly, it grew into a little stub of a nail and the claw never fully formed. After an additional vet visit she decided that the nail bed was damaged so the full claw would never come back, it never affected Smudge though. She didn’t seem to be bothered by the cleaning and never missed the nail.

Healing vibes to your bun! I hope it’s a quick recovery

Thanks you guys… I’m going to call the vet now and schedule an appt just so he can check it out. It makes me so nervous that the quick is exposed. It just sounds so painful. She seems completely unaffected by it. Like, if I hadn’t found that nail and inspected her foot I never would have known anything was wrong. I hope the nail at least grows back enough to cover the exposed quick.

Oh, that’s terrible! Good luck with the vet. Get well and feel better soon!
