Hello everyone, it is my first time posting here. I want to explain a situation incase anyone has been through something similiar and can maybe tell me what is wrong.  I will be going to the vet this friday, but I am constantly worried about this issue and I am very worried about vet bills, since we have been spending lots of money on vet bills lately.

My rabbit Anabelle was saved from a breediing situation that was famous for not taking proper care of their rabbits (watsonville incident). When we got her she had respratory problems, sneezing and running eyes and she was underweight. She is also 3-5 years old btw and is spayed.  I was advised by some rabbit experts to put her on alfafa pellets and baytril. Her last few days of baytril she started to pee on the carpet, which she never ever does, so I took her off alfafa pellets since I’ve read about calcium in their urine. She has been off of baytril and alfafa pellets for a week now. Anabelle has been soiling herself, her tail is often wet and her legs (no scalding though). She is just really dirty down there with urine stains. I have not seen any bladder stones, her urine seems fine doesnt seem sandy or thick or discolored. She eats lots of hay and only a cup of veggies and shes been drinking a lottt of water. She doesn’t lay on her stomach anymore like she always does which makes me think it must be a big problem. Other than that, Anabelle is still a pretty happy rabbit, she does not act like she is sick at all and has lots of energy, just that she doesnt sleep on her stomach anymore or side.

Has anyone had this problem before? What do you think the vet is going to do and what should I do? Any help will be great.

I have read many websites about this condition and it has told me that I would probably have to do many exams… which will cost a lot, which I am worried about but still very willing to treat this problem.

        UPDATE -RESOLVED

Update this is my most recent post, 1/27/14. I have been shaving anabelle before she starts any peeing problem, but lately it is as if the peeing problem has gone away itself with no diet change or medicine. I guess it was a matter of time. Shaving did help too, I used the Wahl Mini Pet Trimmer on Amazon, work’s great!

Sounds like it could be a UTI.

Has she been spayed? If not, you may want to get her checked out, female buns have a VERY high chance of cancer, 80-86% by age 4.

Well, first you need to get a vet to check her out to see if that is what it is. If so, antibiotic time! If not, it may require more poking around to see what is wrong.

I took my rabbit to the vet thinking he had a UTI, what the vet does is push on the rabbit’s bladder to try to get a sample (I know with cats and dogs sometimes they just stick a needle into the bladder for a sample so maybe some vets do that with rabbits). They’ll do some tests on the sample to figure out what antibiotic to give your bunny if she has a UTI. Just be sure to give your bunny the full amount of medicine your vet gives you. Vibes for Anabelle! Poor thing started out with a horrible life, but now she has a good one with you!

I would call the vet and ask how much the urinalysis is. That’s the best way find out how much.

My entire vet appointment for the UTI test was $90, that included a general check up, but pricing can vary depending on where you live.

I went to the vet and she thought it was strange that a UTI would happen during baytril. She looked at anabelles genitals, and she said it looked like she may have bunny syphilis. I asked if this would explain urinating, and she said yes. Does anyone have experience with a rabbit with vent disease? I kind of doubt she might have it but it would be strange to develop and infection while on an antiboitic. They also checked her stomach so she does not have any stones. I don’t have the medicine for the vent disease yet, but will soon. She also gave me metacam and told me to give it to her for 10 days, that does sound odd to you? It kind of does to me….

Welcome and congrats on providing such a good home to a deserving bunny who waited so long for it!

Metacam is for pain, so that makes sense to me…I think the disease can cause pain. And it actually sounds like syphilis for the symptoms you describe.  I would just phone the vet and discuss further, the prognosis and what the implications are

                                        Update on Anabelle.
The other vet doesn’t think its syphillis, and I dont think it is anymore. We did a blood test and a urine culture test, all showed us nothing. So this may be a behavioral issue? She still drinks a lot sometimes and she urinates on herself. I don’t see what can be wrong with her litterbox either… Any more tips?

I had a rabbit once that had vent disease. Very easy to treat. However my bunny did not have uination problems. Does your bunny have sores or crusties on her genitals? Thats the symptoms that my bunny had. I also thought it odd that your bunny would have a uti while on baytril since many times that is the med that is given for UTIs. Do you notice any stiffness or a gate that seems off? just wondering if she may be dealing with some arthritis.

This is definitely not normal for her backside and legs to be soiled. Hard for me to think its behavioral if she wasnt like this when you got her. How long have you had her?

I’m wondering if she has bladder sludge – definitely not normal for a rabbit to urinate on themselves. Have you had an x-ray done?

i just wanted to update after a reallly long time, anabelle has been through urine culture tests, blood works, x-rays and even an ecunni exposure test. i have had her on many drugs to treat ecunni, infections and parasites and none of them have really worked. There are no signs of syphilis or even bladder sludges or stones. Her x-ray showed her bones to be find also. It seems that no vet really knows what is going on, I have seen four vets including a really great one in the bay area. I find that one of her legs hurt just a tiny bit and it may be about her positioning but so far I have not gotten any advice to fix that, I find what is best for her is to just shave her every single month on her bottom. Anabelle has been doing really well until now her rear has lots of urine scald and we are in the process of cleaning it all up and antibiotics. it makes me very sad

. Other than that she is still a happy rabbit who has no trouble running around or eating but i just wanted to let you all know what has happened.
