okay so i know how i said that i wasnt allergic even though i went to the allergist and all that stuff. well the first few days of me having the rabbit; no problem whatsoever. but a few days after i got my rabbit, i bought some orchard grass so my rabbit can have a “variety” of hays (bad decision) turns out i reacted very badly to the hay and i got a VERY irritated throat that day. i still have it. however i also have a cold.

i have removed the hay and went back to his old regular hay but i am still having “reactions”. i mean i am not itchy or anything; nothing like that. but i do have an irritated throat and the air in my room is different. whenever i step out of my room i can breathe through my mom without feeling like millions of tiny dust particles have entered my throat. but when i am in my room i have a hard time breathing through my mouth without having the need to cough to get all the gunk out. i got my cold a day after i got my irritated throat from the orchard grass (my sister had a bad cold and i drank/ ate after her once… and i didnt know she was still contagious? she was coughing up a lot of mucus but i didnt know that she was still contagious). so i still have a stuffy nose from my cold so it is a bit hard to breathe through my nose but i can do it; my cold is getting better. however i still feel the need to cough and clear my throat every 10 seconds while in my room. and whenever i am NOT in my room i only need to cough every 5 mins or something (i have a lot of congestion/ mucus)

i am dissapointed in myself and my irresponsibility. i tried convincing myself that i wasnt allergic to rabbits. i put my face in a rabbits back and inhaled and no reaction. and ive held lots of bunnies and pet them and no reaction…. the air in my room is very “heavy” and hard to breathe in, while the air in my hallway/ other rooms is very light and “clean” and i can breathe easily and i dont feel the need to cough.

my mom said that she would buy me a HEPA air filter and a stick/ hand vac so i can vacuum up around the cage, and if all else fails we will move the cage to the living / dining room. at the moment he is living in my SMALL room. i really appreciate my moms help, but i mean… its not like im DEATHLY allergic to him right? is this fixable? i bought some allergy medication today so i can try out 2 different brands and see which is better. i brush my rabbit daily but not a whole lot of fur seems to be coming off. ( i use the hair buster and i use it properly but he just isnt shedding a whole bunch cause hes probably done with it for this month ). i also turned off the air vent in my room because my mom likes to turn on the heat and it is SO hot. the house doesnt get over 80º (it stays at 79 or 78 which i doubt even makes a difference. so my room is a few degrees cooler than the rest of the house) but my mom thinks that that is making the air in my room so “stuffy”. i also never open the door because…. eh i dont know. i like my privacy. and i dont want to spread his bunny hairs and dander all over the house,. i doubt my little sister is allergic to him but i dont know. i would leave my door open and block it with a gate so my dog cant get in but i dont want my other family members to have allergies (IF they are allergic). my mom said that we shouldnt think about giving him up just yet and that we should try first, i really appreciate this but you know…. /:

also, i know i am irresponsible -.-. i also blame myself. also keeping him outside is not an option so dont worry (its super hot here in the summer) but i mean… how serious is this? should i open the vent in my room? should i keep the door open and block it with a gate and put a blanket over it so my dog cant see/ get in? again the ONLY symptoms i have are irritations in the throat whenever i breathe (it feels like i inhaled dust particles and i need a cup of water or else i will cough horrendously < thats just how i FEEL. i just need to cough and i feel better for the next 5 seconds, also my nose feels weird..  you know whenever you have a cold and youve been blowing your nose a whole lot and whenever you breathe through your nose and the tip of your nostrils feel hot? thats what i feel too whenever i breathe in my room, and only in my room)

Now allergies is something I know all about.
First, open the vent and let some air in. Even without an allergy a build up of allergens in an unventilated area will set anyone off, including your bun. Hydration is important make sure you are getting plenty of water. I have food allergies and find that often I will suffer from other things simply because I have not had enough water and have let my allergy to gluten get out of control thus reducing my immune system. If I control my wheat/gluten allergy I don’t seem to have the problems with hay fever and sinus that use to curse me years ago.
You’re mum is right about the hepa filter also one of those ionising units in the room may help. It could well be the accumulated dust etc in and around the hay and the rabbit causing the problem.

I agree, having air movement whether it means keeping your bedroom door open, cracking a window or opening your air vents will really help. Also, the biggest change you can make will be to move the bunny to the dining room. I know you’d prefer to keep him in your room but it would make such a huge difference. Getting restful sleep is really important, if you are having a bad reaction to the hay, litter, dander, etc. it will disrupt your immune system and wreak havoc in the long run. An air filter will help some but it won’t be a cure-all. A lot of people here including myself have rabbit related allergies and we’ve all found ways to cope and still keep our precious bunnies. I wear dishwashing gloves and a dust mask when handing hay, wash my hands, arms, and face well with soap as soon as I’m done petting my bunny, and I have a $300 air purifier next to my bed. Orchard grass can be potent and it makes me whole face itch and burn just thinking about it. I give my bunny oat hay from Sierra Valley Pet Hay as it has very little smell and I can tolerate it well. Just remember that not all hays are created equal – my bunny hates oxbow’s oat hay.

I would definitely move your bun out of your bedroom. You breathe deeper when you sleep, so you’d be inhaling more dust/fur/dander then. best to have him out of the room.

Wear masks and gloves when giving hay and cleaning, and change your clothes afterwards too. Best to keep the dust and hay contact to a minimum.

Honestly, it all sounds like a cold to me right now. Colds typically start with a sore throat, move on to the stuffed up sneezing part, then end with a cough. Not saying there aren’t allergies at play, but right now all of the things you’re describing come along with every cold that I’ve ever had.

Still, I said it in another thread, I would absolutely get the bunny out of your room. As a person with allergies I’ll never have bunnies in my bedroom even though they don’t bother me.
