        Hi!

I wasn’t exactly sure where to post this but I have a quick question. My bunny Rorschach was finally neutered yesterday, and I was told to keep him in his cage once he got home due to the anesthisia effects which I know is normal. But my question is, is that the only reason to keep him cage-bound? Ie once the effects have worn off (which they should’ve by now) does that mean he can come out to run around again? (he’d be out playing seperately from Abigail for a couple weeks of course since they’re not bonded yet and I wouldn’t want to risk injury)

I could just be completely uneducated in this particular aspect but I vaguely remember when Abigail was spayed a couple years ago the vet told me to keep her in her cage for a couple weeks while she healed. I just assumed that it was so she wouldn’t risk accidently injuring herself while jumping up on things etc and since she had a very large cage I hoped she wouldn’t be *too* bothered by the temporary restriction. Before that I hadn’t had rabbits for about 4-5 years so I couldn’t recall if that’s how we had done it with previous rabbits, and obviously I don’t want to let Rorschach out to run around before he’s ready. Ultimately I feel like I have conflicting information, especially as the place I had him fixed at said that he could come out again the next day (once the anesthesia effects had worn off). I know boys typically heal up faster than girls since their surgery is less invasive so I don’t think he’d need to be kept in his cage for weeks but I feel like a couple days at least is warranted? I couldn’t seem to find much information about that particular aspect and why exactly it is they have to be cage bound (ie how long to do it/if it’s just due to the anesthesia or if it’s also to lessen risk of injury) by googling around so I figured I’d ask here!

        Thanks!

I think that he needs to be confined for a few days so he does not injure himself or the incision. I had to take the different levels out of his home so he could not jump on anything. We checked the incision site by having him stand up for treats. He was back to normal after about three days and it was hard to keep him confined any longer than that. We did try to limit his activity for an additional day or two by keeping him in a room with nothing to jump on.

I think a couple days of keeping him in a cage is what’s best for him. For at least a week just try to keep him from jumping on things.

I think a few days of rest seems like a good idea as well. =) And on the bright side when he does eventually get to run around in at least the bedroom again there’s not really anything he can jump up on. While Abigail is a big jumper, Rorschach finds the bed too intimidating in height since he’s a bit small still so he never tries jumping up there unless he has a stepping stool in front of it, haha
