My kitty has a toy that is filled with catnip on the floor and when Penelope (bunny) was out running around the house, she stoped and sniffed the cat toy for about 5 seconds, shook her head, and ran off again.

Sure, it’s a type of herb.

It’s harmless. I give my buns cat toys all the time.

I LOVE these forums – I’ve seen so many questions that I’ve wondered but didn’t want to bother people with! And I’ve learned so much, I feel like a pro. Haha, I’ve read these, I’ve read a lot of different websites, I’ve made my own opinion a lot by looking at others and websites and such. I’m so excited to go through the years and have personal experiences.

I don’t think it’s ok to eat though-touch is fine, but …well don’t quote me but I don’t think it’s safe for them to be fed it.

Aren’t chives a type of herb? I know those aren’t safe! Not that catnip isn’t, I just honestly don’t know about that one.

As far as I know, they can eat fresh catnip. They don’t react to it like a cat would.

My understanding catnip is it is a mint, and it is also non-toxic (though I don’t know about it in the fresh form???). I have never tried it with my own bunnies but the link that led to Dana Krempels’ explanation says that most bunnies don’t like it.

Here is some info from old thread about it.

I’m considering letting “Thunder” try a little catnip; only out of desperation of wanting to calm him down! He’s a year old, the last couple of months, his behavior has been HORRIBLE. The buck hormones have really kicked in, never thought my nerves would be so shot, having a rabbit for a pet!!! I believe that he literally thinks that I’m his mate, lol, really not so funny with his behavior. I live alone, have had Thunder since he was 8 weeks. He has had run of the house from the start. Right now, I can’t get up and move at all without him RIGHT THERE!!! He recently started nipping at my ankles. He is like a toddler into everything and anything imaginable. He wants to chew everything in sight, other than the things I throw around for him to chew! My jeans all have a hole in them, my favorite blankets as well. It’s crazy – have to put my shoes up, as well as my purse, books, etc.He has even eaten the wallpaper off in a couple of places, right down to eating some drywall!!!!! Don’t know how I’m going to get through this rotten phase with him. Wondering, do most of you have 2 rabbits? I worry about him getting lonely – but have my hands full with just him.
Back to the catnip thing, just need to find something that may settle him down a bit – wish I could give him a valium, lol.Having him “fixed” just isn’t an option right now.As, far as the posts I’ve seen about buns not liking mint – well, Thunder loves peppermint patties! He also eats oranges, pineapple, and banannas, is that strange???

I believe catnip is part of the mint family and so should probably be safe, … must admit its one I’ve been reluctant to give to mine. Peppermint is also soothing, have you tried it? And of course there’s chamomile and lavender, both also known for their calming properties, they are safe, and you could give them (any of the three) dried as well as fresh. If it was my rabbit I’d head for the chamomile, … after watching my cats bliss out on the catnip I’d feel uneasy, but that really is just me. Oh and my two love fresh lavender (English lavender that is).

bunnycrazy – I wouldn’t feed a bunny human candy. Peppermint Patties have chocolate on them which is toxic.

I’ve always heard cat nip is non toxic to rabbits, just generally disliked.
