My bunny Todd has always used his litter box like he’s supposed to with only a few little accidents here and there until this past Sunday. We got a new bag of the regular pine bedding that we had been using (I DO know that pine is not okay to use and I will be purchasing a bag of Carefresh litter tomorrow. I thought it was only Cedar bedding that was bad for them ) and I was having to clean up his messes and rub down the corners of his litter pan with his urine so that his scent was on it and I would have to do this everytime that I cleaned his litter pan out. He won’t use it at all, he won’t even go in it. I don’t know what to do! Is he sick? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Can you give us more information about him? How old is he? If he’s between 4-12 months and not neutered then he’s probably marking his territory because of hormones.

How is his cage set up? Does he have bedding or other absorbent materials (like a towel) on the floor? Rabbits like to pee where it’s absorbent and they can’t distinguish between bedding on the floor and a litter box (one of mine will pee anywhere there is hay so I have to make sure that when they throw hay all over the floor I clean it all up)

Todd will be 3 in June and he hasn’t been neutered. So maybe he’s marking his territory? He has never done this before! And in his cage where I keep him while I’m gone theres no towel or anything. I’m going to take him to the vet on Monday but he’s never been. I’m not sure how he will react.

It could be he’s marking his territory – has anything changed? Have any new animal smells entered the space? (even if you just spent time with a friend’s pet then came home to him without washing up)

Since he’s older and it’s never happened before, I think a vet visit is a good idea since it could be a UTI or something.

Oh my goodness. I never thought. I actually have had 2 cats since April but I have been terrified to introduce them to each other. Todd is like my child and I would really be devastated if anything happened to him so I guess I am a bit overprotective. Todd stays in my room, thats where his cage and his litter box is and he loves to run around in there too. My door doesn’t latch when it closes and the cats have recently learned how to open it. My cat Finn comes in and tries to get a good look at him but I always snatch him up and bring him back to the other part of the house. I never thought about it at all. I feel so stupid! I was so worried. I am still taking him to the vet this week to get him checked up on and I will be getting him fixed in the near future! Thank you for your help!
