is this a good feeding schedule for my rabbit?

in the morning i give him veggies (before i go to school, i also take out any of his pellets from the night before and put it back in the bag) and when i get home from school (and if he is awake) then i’ll give him veggies. and at night i’ll give him his pellets. and in the morning if there are any left (usually a lot /: ) then i will take it out. and re-fill his water and stuff. is this a good schedule? thanks.

How much are you giving him in pellets at night? You shouldn’t have to take them away, as long as you measure it out to proper amounts when you feed him (for adults it’s typically 1/4 cup per 5lbs, for babies unlimited). Powder doesn’t eat all his one setting, but he always finishes them before the next feeding, he just prefers to eat in small amounts.

Do you refresh his hay in the morning? Buns don’t like hay once it gets dry and old, so make sure you do that at least every other day to keep the hay fresh and yummy.

          Otherwise, it sounds fine.

I agree with Stickerbunny – taking the pellets out isn’t necessary if he’s getting the correct amount and if he’s on unlimited (I don’t remember how old he is) then you don’t need to take them out.

he gets around 1/3. he doesnt seem to even eat half of it? im still in the process of transitioning him to timothy based pellets. i got him around 2 days ago and he isnt eating his pellets, am i a tad worried.

also should i feed him a lot of veggies in the morning? or give him half the serving amount in the morning and the other half in the afternoon when i get back from school? i dont want to give him his pellets right after i give him his veggies because he might not be hungry. he is around 5-6 months. he eats his veggies just fine but just like sticker bunny’s rabbit; he doesnt eat them in one serving. in the mornings he eats most of it right away (or so ive heard my mom say) but in the afternoon he eats some and then naps and then eats some more and etc.

and yes whenever i clean out his litter box i throw out the old pee contaminated hay and get fresh hay. although i dont really think its “fresh” because its not in a bag or anything… i mean it IS in a HUGE plastic bag but it isnt big enough for me to close it at the end. its dry but i think its “stale” since its not in a box or anything.. i dont know.. its bermuda hay and he doesnt seem to like it too much. i have some timothy hay but he doesnt really like that either. he probably eats half a handful of timothy hay in 1 day. (i stuffed timothy hay in a toilet paper tube and he finished it this afternoon and i gave it to him yesterday right after 2pm) and i am EXTREMELY allergic to timothy, meadow, and oat grass. but i guess i could some of those timothy hay cubes? do rabbits like those?

The cubes are more for treats, since it doesn’t have the long strands to wear their teeth down. The pellets you can just leave in until the next day when you give him new pellets, some buns prefer to eat in small amounts. Is the hay dry and “crunchy” like grass during a draught, or still kind of “springy” and grassy (though it will be dry)? You got a bale right? The stuff in the middle of a flake will be fresher than the edges of it if its drying out some from the open end. I just have mine in a cardboard box with a plastic bag loosely folded over the top.

Are you giving him a new pellet he’s not used to? If so, it takes a bit for them to get used to it, Powder refused his pellets for about 3 days when I switched him to Oxbow. He was like “I don’t like them, no, they aren’t my regular ones…” now he attacks me to get them. ;D

I would feed him unlimited until 7 months. I have a bunny your age too. Ours have another month of unlimited so just leave them in there. It’s easier for you

Oh and here’s a good reference on when to switch food and how much http://rabbit.org/faq/sections/diet.html

Can we back up a bit to one of the other questions, what about hay getting stale? I wanted to buy in bulk but the boyfriend said no because he thinks it’ll get stale. We only have 1 bunny.

Hay will be fine if kept in a clean dry area, with air flow through the hay. You don’t want to keep air out of the hay, so don’t seal it up. If hay went stale fast, people would never be able to buy it for horses even It isn’t harvested all year round.

The hay you buy will probably be several months to a year old already. It has to be harvested and allowed to dry. As long as it’s kept in dry conditions and allowed to breath, it will be fine.

You should be giving your rabbit 1 cup of veggies for every 4 lbs. My kamdyn is a little over 3 lbs he gets 1 cup. Sunshine is 6 pounds she gets 2 cups. Every morning kamdyn gets 1/4 cup of pellets and normally eats them by the next morning. Sunshine gets 1/3 cup and she also eats her pellets by the next morning. My hay is just in a cardboard box I leave the top open all the time. My rabbits love it and a 50lb bag will last me 5 months. Hay will last a year kept in a cool dry place.
