Nate, my new bun, has become a humping MANIAC! I’m hoping it means he is starting to feel better? after being on antibiotics for 2.5 months. He has a pillow type thing that he humps, I was hoping he would get it all out of his system, but he is constantly trying to hump me! First he bites, then he humps. The bite isnt hard, just leaves a red mark, but it’s making me not want to me around him. I was trying the screechy/scream method at first when he was biting, but now I discovered he’s deaf too. Tait would try and give me the occaisional nip when he was younger and this worked like magic. I have tried walking away, but when I come back it takes him 5 seconds to try and do the same thing. I have also tried turning him around when I can see he is about to do it, but that just makes him more excited. I’m getting super frustrated.

Long story short, help please! anyone have any ideas!?

He can’t be neutered though With his numerous health issues, he wouldn’t make it through the anaesthestic

Well not anytime in the the near future, his vet told me that IF we can get his respiratory problems under control for a certain period of time, we can revisit it.

Ahh sad!! Hmmm. Since he’s deaf, what about just physically moving his head/body and stomping really hard? Since he can’t hear?

I’m sorry the conventional ways are not going to work for you.
Why don’t you try putting your hand on his shoulders just behind his head and push down gently. It is the position that lowers a bunny to the ground slightly and says you are the dominant animal and you have the power. It won’t hurt him, but it should stop what he is doing.

You also might give him a surrogate stuffed toy to take his passion out on. It does work well for many hormonal bunnies. Nothing with beads in case he bites a hole, but a soft bunny about his size (or bear or dog) might appeal to him. Then you can also turn him to it when he starts to hump you.

So I just realized I never replied back! Sorry, i guess I only did it in my head

He does have a surrogate to hump, but he only seems to use it during play time. RP I’ve been trying your suggestion of gently pushing down his shoulders and I think it worked!! Although now he is trying to hump my one dog, so we’re doing it again but with the dog I’ve also been trying to teach him to come by tapping on the ground ands he seems to be responding to that as well

When my bun went through hormonal issues and fell “in love” with me (biting, circling and humping) I got him a little surrogate, though he only used it when i held it from him, then he’d exhaust himself using it and be pretty calm for a couple hours. Maybe you can try holding it for him when he seems particularly rowdy? Its kinda weird but you gotta do what you gotta do!

My lop had the annoying habit of humping also for awhile. He was also trying it on me, and it got really annoying, although he was nt biting or causing any harm. When it was my other rabbit’s birthday, he started humping the balloons I had in his playpen for my other bunny and popped three of them! I was watching him, and got it on video, it was hilarious! I did pick up the remains though, to make sure he did not digest anything, and I haven’t done it since. Since then, I had the idea of giving him an old soccer ball. It moves around, and he can push it around, chase and circle it, and is literally indestructible since he does not bite it. It kept him entertained for hours, playing with it for a minute, then in exhaustion, laying down for a minute, then continuing. I’ll have to submit the video sometime.

Last thing, he does still get excited when I visit him, and still greets me by rubbing his chin on my finger (he even does that to the 2 yo in our house) and is the sweetest thing. He hasn’t tried to hump me or anything since, so I think he had his full of it with the soccer ball. Good Luck!

I have almost the same exact problem!! My bun is not deaf but i can not get him neuterd due to a medical condition…My bun Riley can be a humping maniac at times. For my rabbit i got  a couple of stuffed animals for  him that he can”romance” with. This mostly works, but i have noticed that Riley has some days that all he wants too do is hump things {these days arnt that often} ,but on those days just make sure that the bun has the stuffed animals near and maybe give your bun some space. Thats how i handle his “bad days” and it seems to work. As Riley got used to the stuffed animals he really settled down. Dont give up on your bun if it doesnt work at first, it will work!!! I hope this helps you !
