hello all!  I’m trying to bond Puni and Bamboo.  I’ve had Bamboo for 6 months ago and she was bonded when I got her.  I got Puni a little over 6 weeks ago and he was fixed right before I brought him home.

i’ve been trying to bond them the last couple of weeks and for the most part things are progressing.  They groom and are pretty cool when they are out.  But then Puni gets kind of aggressive, and he emits that distinctive hormonal pungent smell and starts chasing Bamboo.  That ends up in her getting all nippy and they do the circling nipping chasing thing with the occasional fur flying.

Are his hormones still active?  Should I wait for the bonding, and if so, how long?  thanks in advance!

Even after neuter they can release a smell if they want to, both of mine are fixed and have been for a long time and when they want to mark.. phew it reeks. Maybe start ending the sessions a bit short o make sure it ends on a good note ?

Mine released some pretty stinky smells when they had tiffs during bonding, so it’s definitely possible in a speutered rabbit when they’re upset.

I would just keep the sessions shorter and try to end on a good note. A trick I used was to put them in a laundry basket when Hannah started to chase, then I’d shake them around for 30s or so. When I let them out again they were both calm and I could count on a couple minutes of calm and then end on a good note before she started chasing again.

Smudge lets out a “perfume” when she’s cranky at something too. So it isn’t always a hormonal thing. Often it’s a warning or territorial thing.
