So i recently bought a bail of hay because buying it at the pet store twice a month at $10 a bag was getting costly. So now ive given some of this bail away since with one rabbit i have about enough for a year lol!

I bought a 30 gallon tote at walmart and put 4 flakes in it to store in my basement. Then a smaller tote to keep in my closet for easy refilling the cage. The large tote has two small holes by the handles but thats in and the smaller one has none… should i drill some holes in them???

I have the same problem when I get a bale. It needs to be stored where it’s dry and also get enough air so it doesn’t get moldy. I’ve used a metal barrel and large totes and covered the tops with window screen (I had mice in the storeroom back then). If you have enough small holes drilled in the lid to allow the air to circulate, it should be fine.

When I fill the litter boxes, I shake the hay out a little so most of the dust blows away and give it a sniff. Good hay smells wonderful and grassy, you can smell mold pretty easily. You can have small bad spots inside a bale, just mulch your garden with that and use the good, unless the entire bale looks iffy.

I use the big plastic container from walmart and leave the lid slightly off, so there is air … and the cardboard box oxbow hay comes in with the plastic bag lightly folded over the top. If your container has no holes, you’ll want to put some in so the hay can get air.

              Agreed with Stickerbunny.
