I’m home from college for winter break. I was home today when my sister was introducing her friend to Olive (the bunny<3) when her friend said "that looks like the rabbit I saw at the top of your street on the way over, he was just running around." I went into panic rabbit rescuer mode and went to talk to my mother about going to catch the rabbit, she informed me the house actually has 3 rabbits and that they let them have "free range" of the front yard .. And they tend to stay around in the front yard. My mom explained she's told the neighbors all the dangers and they pretty much don't care.
Is this legal? Their street has a 40 mph speed limit and people speed like crazy on it. I want to just go get them and take them away where they’ll be safe… besides stealing them (which I’m considering) is there anything I can do?!?

you could call the local rescue or shelter and let them know there are bunnies running free. often they will mount a rescue and take them in. It isn’t safe for them like that

Honestly, I dont know about stealing them, definitely contact a rescue group… but also, just so you know, any animal technically belongs to the county once they leave the property and it’s anyones game.

Yeah I think that’s what I’ll do. I’m going to try to see them for myself tomorrow and then call it in. how can people be so ignorant/cruel?? I hope they can be saved.

Thats exactly how I came by my babies Pepper and Piglet. They were left to free range, or their parents were, and were breeding exponentially. A rescue group went in with boxes and collected them and I got Pepz and Piglet as fosters (they’re my forever babies now) There is probably a council by-law that covers the situation but it depends on what country you are in. Australia, yes, there are laws as rabbits are also a feral breed and are governed by control laws.
If these rabbits have not been desexed then they are or will be breeding that’s when it gets really bad and the local cats have smorgasbord. So, if they were to mysteriously disappear in the wee small hours of the morning and the neighbour was concerned enough to ask you could always say that you saw them being carried off. You don’t have to mention that it was in a pet carrier.

It is actually your local city animal control officer that is the legal guardian of the well being of animals that are hurt or endangered. That’s who you could call to have it be completely legal. They would probably remove the loose rabbits to prevent them from breeding and causing an even more serious hazard in the neighborhood. If you have a local rescue shelter that you know about, you can work with them to set up a good no-kill place for them to be brought to by Animal Control. But the owners should probably be contacted by Animal Control because they do things like issue warnings and fines – so it’s within the limits of the law and you don’t do anything illegal in the process. I’d call them and at least ask their advice on how to proceed.

Do it soon, since a bunny pair can breed in 30 day periods at a great rate and the numbers can get totally out of control very quickly.

Those poor bunnies. It’s amazing that they haven’t been attacked by predators or hit by a car. Maybe a visit by Animal Control would make the owners see that they should be keeping the bunnies inside. But if the owners have that attitude about the rabbits, I wonder what kind of care they are getting, regarding feeding and health. I hope that they can be taken to a rescue where they will be safe and properly cared for. I hope that none of the rabbits are pregnant, since that will put extra strain on any rescue that takes them.
