My mom was watching Doctor Oz today and he said Chia seeds are good for people and had 500% more calcium than cows milk and more omega-3s than salmon. However, I don’t think the seeds from the actual chia-pet company are safe. I believe you’d have to buy them elsewhere.

I was wondering if Chia plant was okay for bunnies. Is it?

What humans need and what rabbits need are totally different. I’m not sure I would trust Dr. Oz’s advice for animals

Here is a link that I found about calcium metabolism:

I will grow wheat grass in the summer for my rabbit, and she adores it

Uh, I wouldn’t feed a chia pet to a rabbit. And high calcium diets aren’t really good for buns. Kale is high calcium and high absorption, just feed her some of that 3-4 times a week.

I was wondering what the scientific name for “chia plant” and if it was toxic or not.
I imagined that if it were not toxic, that it would be a tasty occasional treat.
If it were toxic or if calcium levels were too high, I wouldn’t feed it.
If someone here knows whether or not it is good to feed, that would be awesome.
If nobody knows, I wouldn’t experiment and try it.

I will try growing wheat grass.
My cat has a habit of stealing the bunny’s hay, so she and the bunny can benefit from it.
              People can eat it, too.
We have loads of Kale. I’m vegetarian and always have some on hand.

Lol, the cat steals the bunny’s hay? I think the cat is hilarous

Haha cats like wheat grass too, so don’t be surprised if kitty steals that.

Salvia hispanica, commonly known as chia, is a species of flowering plant in the mint family, Lamiaceae, native to central and southern Mexico and Guatemala. <— chia pets are that, no idea on if it is toxic to rabbits though.

My advice is always “when in doubt, don’t.” If you’re not sure (and I’m not) I would not try it. Even if the green part is safe, who knows about toxins in the container or soil (or whatever is used to make it grow fast.)

And I heard that an adult Chia Pet bites back.

I wouldn’t feed them normal Chia grass, but you can get a chia pet that grows cat grass for pets.

LoveChaCha, when I refil Nava’s hay my cats uaually at her hay rack or basket before her eating it.  My cat is weird…

My cat prefers orchard grass to timothy…
                        My cat eats lettuce, too.
Anyway, i’ll let the chia pet thing go.
                        =/
Maybe one of my professor in the future will know.
Hopefully, i’m getting into a vet college.

I have three cats and they all steal bunny hay. So does the dog, although she mainly carries it around the house.   The “baby” cat likes to sleep in the hay box.

Hay is fine for cats – they love it. Don’t worry about that.

Good to know, my kitty is scared of the rabbits but that doesn’t stop him from coming into their room and eating their hay. I was worried that it could harm him.
