This is the first time in a very long time that I have not had more than one bunny…

We have all the neccesary stuff for another bunny and my hubby was looking into it. He wants to get something that would be kid-friendly (although it would just be easier to teach her not to touch either bunny for now) and he read that hotots are “gentle giants” in a smaller size. I have no idea as I had never really looked into it much. I personally have grown to really love giants ever since Halo became a permanent part of our family (she was originally my sisters bun) but I also love lops (hubbys not as fond of lops as I am)

Although in the last couple of weeks since Halo’s passing, I have been babying (idk if that’s the right word…might just be spoiling him lol) bud a bit more. He’s probably okay without a friend (don’t know if we’d bond them as this would be his third wife but it is being considered)

My hubby and i have talked about it a little bit and he thinks hed rather get a girl (but i really don’t care either way) he has always preferred female animals, not really sure why…but he def. does not want to get a younger bun because of the changes in temperment. We found a really good vet in town that does spay female buns several times a week and we’re gonna take bud in for a checkup next week after new years….

Another question while im thinking about it… Bud is 4 years old (i have no idea when that happened lol)  Is he considered an old man now? Should he be on a different diet than younger adult buns?

He’s not super old yet, I’d say hes a middle adult

Is it possible around where you are to visit rescues with Bud and let him pick his mate?

Let me tell you, having 2 buns and having to keep them separate is not something I’ll likely do ever again. The territory poop wars are bad, I don’t know if that happens with adults, but man. They both pretty much lost their litter habits for awhile, Samson got hers back, and Lady is just now getting better, but it could be a phase….

As for kid friendly, I, with a 2 1/2 and 4 year old, fully believe no bun is kid friendly. You can teach your kid to be bunny friendly though We have a strict, 2 finger petting policy here, and both the bunnies love them for it. But if I didn’t teach the kids, the bunnies would be horrible with them because they would fear them, you know?

Oh yeah.. Halo was great with my 10m and she was a giant. I think that was the logic for him anyway…but i know it doesnt always work that way. She loved everybody. And everybody loved her!
Tehre aren’t really any bunny rescues around here…and the spca up here rarely gets rabbits (im afraid to think what happens to the buns nobody wants…especially around here)

But I’ll def. look into it. I never had too much of a problem with poo wars but maybe i just got lucky!
There shoudl def. be something on here about teaching kids to be bunny friendly!

              There should be
Poop wars is *probably* because Lady’s not spayed yet and they are both under a year, so you likely wouldn’t have the problem?

I couldn’t find a place near me that allowed bunny dates either.

Rabbits are considered adults at 6 years of age. I think if you and your family have the time, money, and space then yes you guys are ready for a second bunny. Bunny dating is great if it’s possible where you live. Otherwise a good way would be to go and see rabbits and pick one out based on their personality. There’s a lot of stereotypes about breeds but really it’s a case by case scenario.

Yeah that’s true. I wish bunny dating was possible. I really do.
There aren’t even too many places to get bunnies (except “accidental” litters…) We actually found someone who thought they got two females (everyone knows this story, I bet) Well…one of them wasnt…so babies…but they are 4 months old, still in with mom…so it’s possible moms prego again and some of the babies could be prego…. -.- When will people learn? And the two original were bought for easter present….and the girls wanna keep 2…so not they have atleast 4. I don’t know if they are in a hutch or not.
As much as I would LOVE to get one of those (they think they are new zealand whites) I dont wanna tempt myself with young baby buns….cause I know me, I’ll wanna keep them all! And their litters aren’t the smallest either.

We’re definitly think about it longer before we decide… but we’ve been looking and other than pet stores, breeders (not too many registered around here) and the “backyard” breeders we’re kinda stuck. Maybe we’ll go into the city (which is like 45 minutes away…lol) and look to see if they have bunnies

I just had to add my experiences with the poop war issues– For me, it was about the bunny more than the age. (though younger and unaltered bunnies may be more apt to mark).

Bailey and Rucy would poo battle up their areas (they were separated)…and they were both spayed and older. Rucy though stopped doing that after Bailey passed away. So it was definitely a battle between those two. Jack and Vivian definitely created poop wars (though it was mostly Jack) when they were going through their bonding period, but things settled down once they were fully bonded. So you just never know.

Of course, that shouldn’t scare you a way from trying if you want to try and get another bunny, just something to keep in mind.

Good luck and keep us updated.
