My poor Smudgie girl has been having issues with her little nose again, so we’re going in this afternoon to get her checked out. Hopefully she doesn’t have another issue on top of her allergies I know she is allergic to timothy hay, not sure if she is allergic to anything else. Wonder if the pellets are causing her allergies to flare up again? She may have to go on a pelletless diet, which is going to make her and Monkey very cranky.

Vibes for my little Smudge Bug please!

            Vibes for Ms. Smudge!

What about the oat hay pellets that BB sells that are parsley flavored if the timothy based pellets are causing allergies…just a thought.

Let us know what the vet says.

That could be an idea. We got the bunnies the BB christmas prezzies bag, so theres oat pellets int ehre, and Smudge adores them. Of course. She can’t say no to food of any type.

Anyway. The vet says we can try a no timothy period diet for a couple weeks, so no pellets ot timmy treats of any kind. We’ll see how that goes. If it doesn’t help, then he thinks it could be pasturella. But he doesn’t want to put Smudge through tests and such if it isn’t needed. So, no pellets for hte girlies tonite!

Oh, and he says Smudgie is getting pudgy. And the culprit could be…. the orchard hay! He got curious about the protein in different hays, and sent off soem oxbow hays of all their varieties, and orchard hay came back at 16% protein, compared to oat at 7%, and timothy at 10%. So don’t believe the labels all the time He says if timothy hay causes issues for people and allergies, go oat, not orchard.

Hm, interesting about the orchard. Though, my girl won’t eat any other type of hay… but she has no weight issue and it took about 3 months to get her to even eat the orchard lol so not sure I want to mess with it. o.O

Hope Smudge just needs a change in pellets (((SMUDGE))) let us know how it goes.

{{{Smudgie}}} Huh-yeah my guys eat orchard mostly though I found Zupreem timothy is AMAZING so they get less orchard. I had no idea-that’s something to think about with their delicate kidney/liver -a lower protein level is generally better…hmmmm well keep us posted!!

Well I learned something today! I’ve been wondering why the buns’ urine is so rusty colored after orchard and why they seem irritated by it. I guess we’ll have to give it up because Mimz in particular has to watch what goes in his kidneys.
Vibes to Miss Smudge that she is feeling better again soon!
Apologies to the Queen of the Universe (Her Monkeyness) that she may have to learn to do without pellets.

I might have to sneak her a couple now and then… she so far turns her nose up at the oat ones, although smudgie luvs them.

Good to hear shes been checked out. When was the last time she had a flare up?

There can be many variances in hay, season to season, region to region. Even when hay is cut can effect the protein levels. I think the labels only give an average nutrional content.

I read an interesting thing on another forum recently. A member posted that they needed to keep windows open inside where they kept the rabbits because one needed the cool air to keep their airways open. They mentioned hot air could cause the nasal ducts to swell and cause irritation (like sneezing). Another bun owner discovered it was a heater that might be causing her bun to sneeze. I actually thought of Mimzy when I read it but had forgotten about it til now!

I know its a runny nose not sneezing that is bothering Smudge, but do you think any variation in your indoor temps could effect her?

What about the hay you’re currently using? Is it more dusty then normal?

{{{Vibes}}} for Smudge and calm {{{vibes}}} for Monkey in case she’s cross about not getting pellets.

Sammy loves the Oat Hay w/parsley flavoring pellets, so maybe Miss Monkey will eat them if they are the only pellet available. I am very pleased with them.
Sammy also always has preferred her Oat Hay, so switching to it is a big help for a Timothy-free zone. I picked up somewhere that the Orchard hay (which I think of as Orchard Grass) is sweeter and softer, so it would make sense that it might be more fattening as well.

Nope, the hay is the same as ever. Temperatures haven’t fluctuated much at all int here. Haven’t even had to turn on the heat yet this winter.

Monkey survived her first night without her timmy pellets, lets see how she does a second night lol.

Well, Monkey cannot eat many pellets, can she :~) I’d think she’d fill up on 2 or 3 of them…

That is interesting about the Oxbow Orchard as their nutrition states 7% protein. I would ask them about this and let them know about the results your vet got back.

Vibes and keep us updated. Hopefully Smudge will soon be feeling better

My vet says it is likely because when hays are tested, they test the whole stalk and leaf. The stalkier bits having less of the protein. But then, when the hay is all made pretty by oxbow, they remove a lot of the stick-like stalk bits, raising the protein levels by just keeping the tasty soft leaves.
