i took my boys to the vet today. the vet said peepi is developing arthritis and she wants me to start giving him glucosamine daily. so i was wondering if anyone’s given glucosamine before. is there a certain brand i should try to find?

peepi’s also starting to get cateracts. :\

I’ve used Cosequin caps for small dogs (it’s a caplet that you open and pour the powder on veggies). I ordered mine on Dr. Fosters and Smith but I’m sure you can find it many places.

It’s a wonderful thing-we haven’t done this yet but you’ve reminded me that we may start soon with Rupert! Your vet didn’t recommend a brand or dose?
            That’s too bad about Peepi’s cataracts-did your vet think they would become full or stay the way they are? I’ve had two blind bunnies and can tell you sincerely it was nothing to them. Chuck was blind when I adopted him and Noot became blind. It was impossible to tell watching Chuck that he was blind (Though he startled easily, he was also deaf so could be either) and Noot didn’t seem blind at all either. Animals adapt to these things so well, with no feeling sorry for themselves and just adjust. It’s sad to think about but I assure you, Peepi will adjust *hugs* and {{Vibes}}

thanks, i’ll look for that brand.

the vet didn’t mention a brand and for dosage she said 100mg a day. she didn’t say specifically, but i think she thought the cateracts will become full. thanks for the kind words. i’ve read about chuck and noot so it’s good to know they manage well. the vet was also saying that they often still have some peripheral vision even with full cateracts.

I also wanted to add that KatnipCrzy has recommended a few times on here the human form Cosamin DS. Apparently the same as cosequin ds but readily available and possibly cheaper?

I’m considering starting Jersey on it too as she’s been favouring a paw she injured months ago. It’s made me wonder if issue with ligaments or cartlilage.  And Rumball being a year older, he may as well have it too…

I am curious, how did your vet determine arthritis in Peepi?

Yep, been there done that with Spockie.
I used the basic generic glucosamine from the drug store. I’d take a pill and grind it into powder with a mortar and pestle each morning, take a slice of apple, cut a little triangular hole in it, pour in the gluc. powder, put the hole piece back on top and give it to him. Just a small wedge of apple (a favorite treat) used to get gobbled right up, glucosamine and all.

It sounds like more trouble than it was. I think some folks sprinkle it onto wet lettuce to get it in. Mostly, you may not get your bunny to munch a pill. The Cosamin DS has been recommended highly here, more recently than when I treated Spockie.

The Cosequin capsule one for small dogs is already ground up – you just pour it out of the capsule, so it’s pretty easy. And it’s not flavored either like some of the animal ones.

the vet said peepi’s hind leg joints felt larger than normal and he also was reacting strongly when she was feeling and moving his hind legs around. she also thought he had decreased muscle mass in his hind end (weight loss was the reason i brought the boys to the vet). i had also noticed peepi doing a weird stretch lately where he presses his hips into the floor. i’ve seen him stretch like that before, but he’s been doing it a lot more lately.

also, a few years ago peepi had some x-rays and that vet thought it looked like he had slight hip dysplasia. so we knew he could be prone to joint problems.

i ordered some cosamin ds, should get it next week.

Jack had arthritis in his spine and foot. Though a part of his spine was a little sore to the touch, but it didn’t seem to bother him too much though it showed up in the xrays. His foot was what bothered him the most, but there was a glucosamine type of mix that I got from my vet and I did notice his activity level increased (until he got cancer), but it did seem that the glucosamine helped.

Is adding glucosamine to their diet something that should only be done under vets recommendation? Does anyone know?

Good question JG. Though it does not have to be under a prescription and my vet said I could find glucosamine at health food stores and online, I personally would prefer to consult my vet. I want to know the correct dosage that would be the most helpful for the health issue my bunny has — whether it be serious, mild or for senior maintenance.

I would have to talk to my vet about if there are consequences for giving too much or ??  . I haven’t researched this or talked to my vet about this so someone else may be more educated about this aspect.
