hey guys, so i was wondering if mazuri is a good rabbit food brand? for adult rabbits? just regular pet rabbits; not show rabbits or anything lol. i heard that its alfalfa based but the first ingredient is timothy hay…?

thats the food im talking about. the reviews are excellent. but i’ve read other forums on this food and people say theres not a BIG difference? the only ‘bad’ thing about this is that the protein is .15% higher than it should be. but other than that everything else seems to be okay. also, while im at it, would you mind giving me some opinions on this cage? it seems to be a ‘big’ cage and with a fair price:

thanks! oh and have a merry christmas! PS. i had built a nic cage a few weeks ago and was about to buy the wood and such to actuall build it (i just got the cage set up with zip ties thats all) and my mom said i couldnt get a rabbit and made me take it apart (which took a long time and was painful) and AFTER i took apart everything and returned everything she said i could get a rabbit again -.-… in the end she admitted that she wants a ‘simple’ cage like the cages in stores… i dont like her idea but i sort of have to listen to her as i am living under her rules. my parents say i can buy the rabbit and its supplies whenever *i* am ready; but i would like to wait until i’ve got EVERYTHING figured out. (at the moment i’m trying to figure out which local feed store sells timothy hay and for how much. not that money matters; i would just like to save money when i can)

Pet store cages are way too small. WAY too small. An xpen or NIC condo would be best. Or free range. But store cages do NOT have the room needed for a pet bunny.

For pellets, I would stick to Oxbow or APD pellets, they are the highest quality, and you don’t need to second guess them what so ever. Stick with the best. They can be pricier, but as the smallest portion of their diet, you won’t have to buy them often anyway.

I was feeding mine Mazuri for awhile, the ingriedients looked good to me and the nutrition was good, but I switched to oxbow anyways because only petsmart carries mazuri and I go to visit family a lot sometimes for extended time and its just easier to find oxbow pellets.

Pet store cages they have in stores are way too small, I’ve only seen one that looked big enough at petsmart but it was really $$$$, mine has a cage but its a huge pet chalet from online that I attached an exercise pen to when he got bigger so he would have lots of room.

That’s so frustrating to have made a good habitat and then take it apart, only to need it again. You could start by asking your mother how big a footprint in the room she will allow, and try to form the xpen around that designated space. It’s probably big enough. Maybe go by the dimensions of a small area rug and ask if that’s OK with her. That way, you can build accordingly if you keep it simple.

The link you provided shows what is often called a Starter Cage, and is really only good for baby bunnies. Rather than invest in one of those, you can get a much bigger one for more $ but it’s a one time cost that can last a decade or more if it’s a good size. I had Spockie in one from Petsmart that came on wheels, was about 4’x4′ or larger and had 2 platforms and he loved it. I donated it to my vet when I got an xpen which is much better for Samantha.
You can use a Starter Cage if you attach an xpen to its opening, expanding the running area. Often a bunny will like the cage for sleeping, or the litter/food set up where you can clean it easily, but needs the extra space from there.

Right now everyone will have big sales starting tomorrow, so do some shopping and browsing online for a good deal on a larger cage. I found my big on on sale years ago by just walking in one day. It was worth it.

If you have to get a pet store cage, I would personally recommend the Marchioro XL cage. It is the biggest plastic bottom cage I’ve ever seen in person at a full 2×4 feet. Most of the other pet store ones are 2×3 feet. Of course, the rabbit will require a lot of exercise time outside of the cage everyday.

                    thanks for the replies!

and well i thought that cage was a bit small too., but i mean its “only” 10 inches shorter and 4 inches less wide, and 4 inches shorter. the nic cage i made was going to be a 4x2x2 (with a little shelf / half level) it was great. but my mom does not want a huge cage that is “complicated” to make. i honestly dont know why she thinks that. maybe because it looks complicated? i have no idea.. i guess i could buy an xpen but we have carpet (in my room and the hallway my room is located in, because my parents are in the middle of changing our carpet to vinyl but they only do it during the summer) and it would be horrible if he peed on the carpet…

i honestly that that cage was an OKAY size? but if its not then i wont buy it.

Sorry, its really not an ok size. Much too small for a rabbit.

well thats okay, my mom said i could make a nic cage. are these measurements okay? 56x28x28 inches. it will have a 28×28 inches “step” / “loft” thing on the “second floor” is that okay? thanks

That should be OK. It’s long enough (almost 5′) but pretty skinny since it’s just over 2′ wide. If your bunny is a climber and uses the second floor it sounds OK to me. Just give her some play time out of it for a few hours a day.

Mazuri is a good food! I would buy the chinchilla formula for my chinchillas before Oxbow became readily available.

Mazuri is good food but Oxbow is better. I guess it doesn’t really matter but Oxbow is definitely a brand I’d go for. If Oxbow wasn’t in stock you should get Mazuri. Btw, if you have a small cage you should get your bunny out to exercise more
