I alway buy the bigger bag of oxbow timothy hay for Dexter since he was little.  He prefers the more greener softer hay which Oxbow usually has.  The last 2 times I bought his hay it has been very crunchy, sharp, and dried out so to speak.  I returned the first bag and lucked out and got a softer hay at another store.  I just bought hay again for him a few days ago and it is once again too dry for him and he wont’ touch it.  I might have to return it again in hopes they have a softer hay but it didnt’ seem like they did.  Is there any way to soften it up (probably a stupid question).  I don’t know what else to do for him.  I never really had this problem with Oxbow before and have been buying it for the last 3 years.

If I can’t find a softer hay to replace this with which hay in the BB store is the softest Timmothy hay?

I am so stumped with my silly picky Dexter and his hay

I’ve bought 2 bags of “bad” hay, I think its just luck of the draw. Unfortunately my husband didn’t listen to me and return it and tried to use it even though the rabbits wont touch it, so we’re out 17 bucks. VERY annoying.

I’ve got this problem at the moment too. I got two large bags of hay and my bunnies are barely touching it..

I got a new bag of Oxbow Timothy delivered to me yesterday, and I’m glad to see that it is better than the previous bag I got. That bag had long, stiff stalks, and my bunnies ate it, but didn’t like it as much. I keep a variety of hay on hand. I also have Zupreem Timothy hay, which has always been a softer hay, and have Oxbow Botanical, Oxbow Orchard and Oxbow Organic Meadow Hay. At the moment, I also have some second cutting Timothy that I got from Bunny Bytes. It seems that it can be a crap shoot when buying hay. There is so much variation in it, according to time of harvest, weather conditions when grown, etc.

The softest Timothy hay in the BB store is American Pet Diner Timothy Gold 2nd Cut Hay, but they only have it in small bags.

Do you ever buy orchard grass for your bunny?  That’s a softer hay.

I use orchard grass because my girl prefers a softer hay and even the dry orchard is soft enough for her. I got a 50lb box from oxbow and some of it is drier than normal, but she doesn’t care cause it’s still softer than timothy. I would see if he’ll take orchard, he might like it better and it’s pretty much the same nutrients as timothy.

No I never tried orchard grass but I will give it a try. He is picking through the rough stuff now but not enough of it. I will get to the store tomorrow and see what I can find for now. Thanks for the replies

Most bunnies do like orchard grass.  In addition to being softer, it is also a little sweeter than Timothy hay.
