my 3 month old lop nutmeg came home with me about 3 weeks ago. he has never been litter trained (obviously) and what i had as his cage setup was a large cage with carefresh natural litter all inside. he hadn’t picked one corner to poop! he went anywhere and everywhere, and when i let him out of his cage he would leave some poops but not too many. it’s been like this sincei got him. one attempt to litter train him was i put a large enough litter box in his cage with different litter than the kind throughout his cage so he would notice the difference, but it failed. he pees in his litter box when he’s out, but not when he’s in his cage. he will poop in there but its not consistant. people have suggested i take ALL the litter out of his cage and just put it in the litter box, but that wouldn’t be very sanitary, so i came up with a happy medium. i lined the bottom of his cage with puppy-pads (recycled so they’re safe but he doesn’t chew them anyways) and then filled his litter box with his normal litter mixed with the other litter. he used it to poop and pee but he still pooped all over his cage!! thank god he doesn’t pee anywhere else but his litter box but his pooping is a problem because im constantly picking up tons of bunny nuggets and putting them in his litter box. anyone have any ideas of why he does this and what i can do to break him of this and FINALLY litter train him? oh and so you know he isn’t spayed/neutered yet and i don’t know his sex, i just refer to nutmeg as a ‘he’ for right now. i don’t know if that would contribute to his behaivor but it doesn’t hurt to know. thanks!

Actually the fact that the uses the litter box to urinate is a good thing. As for the poops – that is territorial and age related. You may not be totally successful until he is neutered and gets older. Keep trying though. It doesn’t happen overnight and requires you to be diligent.

It’s perfectly sanitary to not have litter everywhere if he learns to only use the box. Thats why you don’t want the litter all over the cage. Once he is used to it, he won’t go anywhere else.

He’s getting close to neuter age if he is in fact a boy, so you may want to look into that soon That will help litter training as well.

He sounds like he’s on his way to being trained.

Do you have hay in his cage? Placing the hay only in the litterbox or in a rack over the litterbox helps. They poop a lot where the hay is.

Sounds like Nutmeg is doing well for his/her age. Pooping will calm down after desexing usually, and once he’s settled in properly.

As JG said, having hay in the litterbox should help too 🙂

Hang in there, baby bunnies are A LOT of work, but once desexed, it does get easier.
