hi my dworfX rabbit looks healthy and well but after i gave him a bath his poos changed and went kinda soft ,squishy and ovalish shape when they are usually hard and close to a perfect circle. this was the first time i have bathed him and he loved it . after a while the poos went back to normal but i dont know if this is anything to be worried about… so if anyone has had this happen to their rabbit or knows what it is could they please tell me … i also want to know what illnesses they can get and what to look out for to help me in the future…

        many thanx

Bunnies should not get bathed unless they have soaked themselves with urine due to sickness or a serious mess of poop bum.

Your breeder didn’t give you much info :/ Didn’t even give you a breed lol. So all you know is your bun is a dwarf mix… ugh. Some breeders just shouldn’t have animals…

Anyway, it’s hard to list all diseases and symptoms they can have on here. Best thing is to take your bun in for a check up with a vet. You should always do so when getting a new pet.

Rabbits don’t need to be bathed unless they have a health issue that needs tending to, like poopy butt.

Licking is a sign of affection. You are lucky to get licks from your bunny.

Regarding illness in rabbits, there are several good rabbit health books on the market. Two of the good ones are ‘Rabbit Health in the 21st Century’, by Kathy Smith; and ‘A House Rabbit Primer’ by Lucile C. Moore.

The best thing other than an annual vet visit is to notice any changes in behavior or symptoms that are unusual. If a rabbit has not eaten in 24 hours, they need to see a vet. But don’t let not eating be the only factor in determining that your rabbit is not well.

If their is a change in litter box habits, a change in eating habits, a change in behavior, those could all be signs of illness. Rabbits are going to be very good at hiding illness too, so you have to be vigilant in watching for changes.

I think you’ve had your questions answered-just wanted to say welcome to the forum! We’d love to see a picture of your little boy

It’s great that you noticed the change in poop and realized that is a sign of an issue. So there are many different kinds of illnesses rabbits can get, mostly because the illness is by transmission they don’t get colds like we do because they aren’t in airports and touching other rabbits all the time (usually never except for the rabbits we have at home) but they often have viruses or bacterial infections that are not acute (so say dormant) but that can become an acute illness(i.e. a sickness you see signs of) when they are stressed. The other issue they can have is called GI statis which is short for gastrointestinal stasis and means the digestive system slows down or stops. This has many causes, it’s really a description of the result (the slowdown) and is dangerous. The signs of gi stasis is huddling, tooth grinding, body temperature cooling, eating or drinking less or not at all and a lack of or slow down in poop. Other illnesses can present with different eating/drinking/pooping/peeing habits (so know what’s normal for your bunny) decreased activity, change in temperature, runny eyes or nose, sneezing, spinning or rolling etc. So the key is annual exams, and studious observation of their normal behaviour and habits to watch for changes. If there is a change, you want to go to the vet quickly-as the outcome is better and often the treatment more effective and cheaper. The longer they are in distress, often it’s more expensive and may not be as effective.

Thanks Bugzzbunnie That’s kind of you

Depends-any insect that bites can transmit disease. That said we can’t freak out just because there is a bug in the house. Outside buns have so much more to worry about-insects can get them frequently-enough to worry seriously about their health. Though we can get bugs inside too, it’s much less of a concern if they are inside. Where does your bunny live?

Well for a bunny who is inside an occaisional trip outside may be ok. There are risks-for instance I woudl strongly caution to not use a leash, especially not a collar. So many bunnies have broken their backs on here. I would instead build something that the bunny could go in and run around-supervised but also protected. Someone here had their little dog carried off by a bird of prey -while on a leash. IT was a grown up and a dog bigger than a bunny so it can happen. So I would ensure you use something covered and supervise so a cat or fox can’t get in. And read your bunny as to whether he enjoys it or not. Rupert was a stray and LOVES going outside. WE are moving soon and this spring I’ll be building a pen for him to play outside. It will be enclosed on all six sides and buried into the ground-that way even if something were to try to dig to get him they couldn’t as it woud have a floor. And a top. And could not be knocked over. My other buns have never enjoyed the outdoors at all and yours may not either. Also read up on your local bugs and outbreaks-I’m not sure if bird flu could affect rabbits, but it’s already zoonotic so if there is a local outbreak you wouldn’t want to risk transmission. Anyways see if your bunny likes it, do it safe and do it without a leash and collar.
