Hi there my bunny sunshine is almost 5 years old. I rescued her from a rescue group a year and half ago. She lives in my bedroom in an exercise pen I purchased on the internet. It came with a mat to fit the pen. I do have plenty of straw mats about 5 extra large ones in her cage. Lately in the middle of the night about all week long she has been chewing the mat putting big holes I mean big holes in the bottom of it and is swallowing some of the mat. I don’t want this so i get up and have a talk with her. She stops and then when I get nice n comfy in my bed she starts again. So each night I have been up about 4 hours. I took the mat off yesterday because there are to many holes. What was left was a big green rug I had. I put the straw mats on top of the rug and all day she was fine. Last night she started chewing the carpet for about 4 hours. I am at my wits end because I don’t know what to do I do have alot of toys in her cage and lots of straw mats. I am thinking she might be bored I just don’t know what else to give her. I have never had this problem with any of my other rabbits. Today I put down a fitted sheet I am going to see how that is going to work. I was wondering if anyone had any tips to give me to help me out. I don’t have much money right now to go out to the store and buy her anything. Christmas is coming up and some people have bought her toys to chew and play with. Thanks

Here’s what it sounds like to me. First, nighttime is her active time and she’s finding something to do. When you wake up and give her attention, it’s actually encouraging her to keep doing it because she likes when you get up and interact with her.

Second, chewing on something undesirable doesn’t necessarily have to do with boredom. Our bunnies don’t really know what is good to chew and what isn’t – they just know what they feel like chewing at that time. Since she’s chewing something you don’t want her to chew, I’d change the material on the bottom of her pen or cover it really well and see if it deters her. I know my buns will get obsessed with chewing one particular thing and won’t want to leave it alone.

Thanks. I get up and give her the attention because I don’t want her to ingest the mat and have a tummy ache. Plus I don’t want her to chew the entire mat. I do have another question. I saw in the toy archives that there is a diggy box and was wondering if I could use shredded paper my shredder. I did tare up newspaper and put it in a box she didn’t like that to much so I am thinking of trying it with shredded paper. Thanks again

I think that would work.  The only problem may be odor control.

She can eat the grass mats, they wont make her sick.

A simple, cheap toy that seems to get buns interested is what I call the X-tube. Take two toilet paper tubes. Cut one into four pieces lengthwise. Then, cut two sets of slots into the other tube and push the strips into the tube – making it so that no matter how it lays, some point of the cut tubes is sticking out. Buns can’t stand having something pokey up in the air.

I actually push tongue depressors through the tubes, forming an X in the tube and it drives my little boy nuts! He won’t stop playing with it until he’s yanked both sticks out of the tube.

Here you go.  Like I said, if you replace the spokes with popsicle sticks, it’ll last longer for them to demolish.  You could also stuff a little hay into it.

I’m gonna make one of those! Well, probably three, one for each of my buns.

Thanks for the great tips. I actually build sunshine a new cage out of NIC Cubes. I put a plastic tray from a dog crate as the bottom. I just built it today so I shall see. I think things will go great because there isn’t anything on the bottom for her to chew since the floor is plastic!

I’m seconding the X Tubes!! Chester goes NUTS for them! I stuff hay into them, and then either a craisin, or a tiny piece of banana (he will do anything for a piece of banana!) and he just goes crazy until he gets inside and gets the hay and his treat out. When he’s done, he usually drags the ‘carcass’ back to his buncave. He’s got so many in there, I’m not sure how there’s any room for himself but he’s happy so I don’t question too much
