Please send some vibes Hannah’s way! She’s not doing very well.

She didn’t eat dinner last night and we thought it was probably her teeth again (she had them done in 2010). There was a night a month or so ago where she didn’t eat, but was fine the next day, so we hoped it would be the same this time. Unfortunately, she was the same or worse when we woke up I forced some critical care into her and she barely fought it.

I did initially think it was her teeth, but I noticed that she’s kind of leaking pee as she moves around, so now I’m thinking UTI. I got an appointment for her at noon with a new vet (since we moved away from our old one) – it’s an office devoted to exotics, so I thought they’d be the best choice for this kind of situation.

Healing vibes for Hannah and I’ll let you guys know how it goes. She’s quite a big sissy, so I hope she’s overreacting and whatever she has is minor, but she sure looks miserable.

Back from the vet – unfortunately I don’t have a good answer for why she wasn’t eating. Her teeth were ok – some little spurs, but no ulceration. The vet tested for e. cuniculi, in case that was the cause of her leaking pee. Her bloodwork was normal, so no kidney problems. Basically, she didn’t find anything wrong, so it may have been a random stasis issue, or e cuniculi (will get the results next week, but even if it’s positive she has no other symptoms, so I wouldn’t trust that’s what was wrong). If she goes downhill I’m going to take her back for xrays to look for kidney or bladder stones.

In summary, I didn’t learn much. Hopefully it’s just some stasis issue and she’ll be fine. She’s currently running around and chewing on a box, so she can’t be that sick.

One thing that was pretty funny is that the vet I saw was a friend in college and lived across from me freshman year (and her husband was on the polo team with me). So funny when she walked in and we recognized each other! Also funny was that Otto peed on the vet tech while she held him for a nail trim. lol

You might consider getting the spurs trimmed because sometimes even little ones can be uncomfortable. Did the bloodwork show elevated white blood cells for a possible infection?

That’s cool that your vet is someone you know!

My little girl is eating again 😀 She’ll take parsley and munch it down if I hand it to her. She hasn’t finished a whole bowl yet, but I’m hanging her some more every couple minutes and she’s eating it. Hopefully she’ll eat normally at dinner tonight.

White blood cells were normal. The only thing slightly off was a kidney number (I forget which one) but she said that’s normal when they’re a little dehydrated, which she probably is, so they gave her subq fluids.

I’m cautious about trimming her spurs because last time she didn’t eat for three days and that was more stressful than how she was acting before (she ate fine, just slow), but if she continues being bad I’ll do it.

Yeah, I guess it was just a temporary stasis thing! I really thought it was her teeth since they tend to reoccur, but I’m happy if she gets better on her own.

We’re supposed to go out of town this weekend and I already told the girl organizing it that we couldn’t go, but now I’m thinking if she eats ok tonight and tomorrow morning that we’ll go. We have a friend who will feed them on Saturday and as long as she’s eating it should be ok leaving her.

I bet the sub-q’s helped alot too. You should have this vet teach you how to do this if this occurs with her in the future.

It’s not too difficult as long as she’s not super small and super thin – I have a problem doing sub-q’s on those rabbits (but that’s not any of my rabbits LOL). It’s not hard to do once you do it a few times. Took me awhile at first to get up the courage to try it myself, but I’m glad I did.

Here’s a question – I asked about it possibly being a UTI, since the peeing was strange, and the vet said it was possible but very unlikely since rabbits don’t get them often. I thought it was a relatively common thing? Since her white blood cells were normal I assume that’s not it, but I was surprised she wrote that off so quickly.

That’s interesting. My vet has never told me that at all. Heck my rabbits have gotten them plenty – at least that’s what my vets have said and we’ve done fluids and/or antibiotics. Not really sure how you can say that if you haven’t done any urinalysis either. Bladder sludge or stones may require an x-ray but usually the vet can tell by looking at the anal area to see if they have any urine crystallization.

That confirmed what I was thinking. Hmm. If it is a UTI it won’t go away without antibiotics, so I’ll see if she continues to feel bad and pee strange places. It just screamed UTI to me since she would leave little drops of pee in random places, though she was peeing in her litterbox frequently. Her white blood cell count makes me feel better about that though.

I don’t really think it’s sludge either because I’ve seen her pee and it’s usually a clear reddish color. Otto’s is yellow and a bit hazy, which I assume is the calcium, and Hannah’s looks much clearer, so I don’t think that’s it.

I’m glad Hannah is eating again and feeling better! That is strange that your vet said UTI’s aren’t that common- but I believe a vet said that to me once too! Which made me wonder since that’s exactly what BunBun had at the time. It sounds like plenty of bunnies besides mine and Sarita’s have had UTI’s on here too. That said, the normal white count is good- if she had an infection, it would most likely be raised.
Both of my bunnies have peed in what seemed like an involuntary way when they had bad stasis or gas. Maybe they just feel so awful, they’re not even aware they’re going. I don’t remember them really dribbling pee though. I know that’s a sign of UTI but so is going outside the litter box (mine do it often without UTI’s) and posturing (BunBun did that when he had a UTI, bladder sludge and when he gets a sore bum from poopy butt). I also noticed BunBun going to the litterbox a lot with his UTI and making a huge production out of peeing just a little.
Hopefully Hannah just had a tummyache . But if she does this again or you notice more strange things, I would get a second opinion. I HATE doing that- I feel like it’s a personal insult to my 1st vet- but it’s not. It’s just us being extra careful and seeking answers for our bunnies, since they can’t do it themselves.
That would be great if you got to go away this weekend after all! It’s the weirdest thing though- WHY do rabbits always get sick in the middle of the night, weekends, holiday or when we’re planning to go away??I’m so paranoid about planning vacations from BunBun’s illnesses.

Sorry I’ve gotten to this thread late, but very glad to see Hannah is doing better. Oddly enough, Mimzy is off his hay as well and I’m taking him to see his best vet tomorrow a.m. These buns sure know how to worry us!
I sympathize with the tooth dilemma. I have a hard time getting mine to eat after dentals too, and if they’re already not eating well, it’s a fine line to walk wondering if a GA and more pain is constructive.
Odd about the UTI question. I would give that a second look too. No signs of kidney stones or straining to go? Has she eaten any new greens lately? Those tend to set Pip off and her urine color will change and she’ll dribble till the new food leaves her system.
Continued vibes and prayers going for Hannah.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

The girl who saw Hannah is only my age (about 27) so a second opinion with the main vet would be fine if Hannah has another episode (the main vet is pretty famous for exotics in NYC – she’s been on tv a lot). It’s funny that I think a vet my own age must be too young. lol Though it kind of makes me feel good to know her vet is an old friend.

So weird about the UTI thing though, right? It could just be that she was in pain from her tummy and that made her pee (it was always when I force fed her, or when she ran away after). She did go in the litter box a couple times and lift her tail – not sure if she was straining, or just normally pooing/peeing, but she did do it a couple times.

I don’t want to look too much into little things if she’s mostly doing better. She was eating hand fed parsley this evening, and now she’s on to eating lettuce I just leave out, so I think she’s good! Fingers crossed she eats well tomorrow. I guess it was just a little GI issue after all.

I remember when we were flying to Austin, TX last spring and I had her teeth done right before that. Turns out she didn’t eat the whole weekend, but we had a great petsitter who was a qualified vet tech (not just a friend) so she was able to force feed, but I was so worried the whole time. She loves to get sick when we’re going away for the weekend (though we’ve left her for over a week and she was fine).

If she keeps eating like this though our wine tour will be on!!

The UTI thought is interesting…maybe they are referring specifically to the Tract infections but other urinary type issues/infection are common? Only thing I can think of is rabbit pee is slightly alkaline. I don’t know how that compares to cats and dogs but maybe it’s being alkaline has something to do with the thought on their not getting many UTI’s?

Dee, that’s been my experience with my rabbits also.

Though I ditto what others have said about the UTI, I am happy she at least seems to be doing better.  So I’m keeping my fingers crossed

I understand the issue of how even small spurs can cause issues with some bunnies.  Rucy was very sensitive to them, (but thank goodness didn’t get them but a couple of times a year), but even a little discomfort caused her some problems, however, it was painful for her to eat after her trim, and so I would have to syringe feed usually the next meal. Though with the pain meds, she recovered very quickly.  I know that is not the same for all bunnies.

                                                              Continued healing vibes for Hannah!

I agree w/BB about the molar spurs. I would go ahead and make an appt with the regular rabbit vet to get them trimmed. Yes, it may take 3 days to recover and that’s pretty normal for this procedure but you know what to expect. I imagine this may be a life long problem for Hannah.

BB, when Hannah had her first trim, I didn’t even notice anything wrong with her – she was a bit of a slow eater, but she always finished everything and I thought that was how she was. The vet did see an ulceration, so I had them done, but that started the not eating for three days thing. Ugh. This time she didn’t see an ulceration, so I’m not sure if they’re a problem or what. I guess I’ll just wait to see if she gets worse.

She ate again this morning – a bit slow, since between the two of them the food is usually gone in 15 min, but she was eating at least. We’ll feed her when we get home from work and make sure she’s eating before we make the decision to leave or not on the trip. I think she still feels a bit bad though because she’s been chasing Otto like crazy and wouldn’t even let him in the cage this morning after we opened it.
