Ok so I found fleas on my cat and Hoppy I took all the animals out and bombed the house upstairs and downstairs, cleaned all beddings and got Frontline Plus for the cat and the Vet gave me Revolution for Hoppy.  It has only been the 1st month I used it but still see fleas on the cat but know there are a few on Hoppy too, the only reason I know they are on Hoppy still is because I see him scratching and did see 1 on him a week or so ago.  I guess I am wondering what others have done for fleas?  My cat is 9 years old and has never had them before but we went to a friends that had a flea problem and must have brought them home on us and they migrated to Hoppy and the cat.  What other flea products do your vets suggest since I am guessing the Revolution is not working for Hoppy and the Frontline Plus isn’t working for the cat.

Revolution should work. You may have to give a few doses and really clean your home well. Is your cat indoor/outdoor?

Okay, I know about this stuff because my mom has massive OCD and has bombed our house before.

You said you bombed your house but still see fleas on the animals, the fleas WILL get all over your house again if you do not nip this in the bud. Fleas can and will jump on you, your clothes, your bed, your carpet, pretty much anything wih a fur-warm like environment. This is what I recommend:

Step 1) If you don’t have anymore get another dose of flea remover for the cat and bunny.
Step 2) Seperate the animals until they are flea free which typically takes 12-48 hours.
Step 3) Steam clean EVERYTHING (bomb again if necessary)
Step 4) Wash ALL of your clothes, blankets.

Do these exact steps and you’ll be flea free. : )

You need to vacuum multiple times a day, cut up a flea collar and put it in the vacuum bag/canister. You need to vacuum up the flea eggs and dump them or they will keep breeding!

Wow, How timely is this. I have two rescue buns and an 11 day old whoops litter and I have found a couple of fleas. Where there are two there are more. I am a bit worried about using Advantage on a Nursing Mummy Bunny so looked for natural remedies.

I have all of the herbs in my garden and the natural oils on hand ….. just had to step away, the little monsters eyes opened last night and I have moved their nest to the ground floor. One of them decided to lead an expedition out of the nest. All back in the cuddle puddle now. Yes, As I was saying. Going to give this a try. I have hard floors through the whole house as Western Australia is a hot sandy environment and full of fleas. The cats are being treated constantly and I am struggling to get on top of it. So dual purpose. Advantage for cats, herbal sprinkle for bunnies and house and garden sprinkle to prevent re-infestation of cats. Yay !

Most of the sites I have visited and my local pet store owner who also volunteers at a small animal/rabbit shelter say that Advantage is the best for fleas on a rabbit, for cats I prefer Advocate as it also treats heart worm. For my bunnies half an ampule each of (cat/kitten 4 kg and under) is the correct dosage but check with your own vet to be sure.

If you have a flea infestation in your home it will take 3 months or so in a row of treatment for all of the lifecycles of the flea to be killed. fleas are constantly reproducing so you have to keep treating as there is NO product that can kill a flea when it is in the pupae stage.
Flea bomsb are not as effective as sparays as the product goes into the air and then settles- but it does not get into the areas where cats and bunnies like to hang out- under furniture, etc.

I have bombed, cleaned all bedding and clothing, we only have carpet in the basement office everything else is hard wood or concrete, I got this stuff from my uncle to spray on the beds and carpets called Defend. I brush the cat with her flea comb but only get 1 live flea off her and a few dead ones. Hoppy doesn’t seem to have them anymore so maybe the Revolution the vet gave me worked but I need to get him another dosage as I am putting more Frontline on the cat so I should still keep the revolution on Hoppy. I am not bombing again as my husband has a bearded dragon and its cold outside here and we have no where to bring him like we can just put the cat and bunny in the car. Besides the flea bomb keeps killing for up to 7 months it says on the can and I can say it sure kills crickets as he buys new ones the next morning they are all dead so we can only buy 12 per day now which sucks but oh well. So I know the bombs worked and are still working but I guess only for the crickets. I have a hard time using any brush or comb on Hoppy as I use the flea comb on the cat daily. I want to use a flea comb on Hoppy too but he just runs away the second I get close to him with the comb. Thanks everyone for your quick responses. Any more suggestions are still welcome.

As someone who brought fleas in my house from a shelter, you might want to look for an insect growth regulator (IGR). I don’t know if
Defend is an IGR. Anyway, I researched this and IGR’s are NOT harmful to bunnies (don’t know about other pets). This stuff stops the flea cycle in its tracks. Its keep the pupae from hatching into a flea. The product I brought is Precor Premise Spray from Amazon.com. A can covers 1600 sq ft. You will need to cover all food stuffs, spray and leave the premises for a few hours. For me, I caught the fleas right away and they were only contained in my living room and didn’t make it to the bunny room. I did dose my bunnies with revolution just in case. I put my bunnies in the bunny room, closed the door and sprayed my living room only. I haven’t had a flea since. This stuff really works. Also, I have hardwood floors in the living and dining room and carpets in the bedrooms. If you use it, I would recommend putting your pets in a room with the door closed just in case, but my bunnies have not been affected by this at all.

I understand your frustration. Nothing is worse than having a bad flea infestation! There is something that I didn’t see anyone recommend yet, but I might have over looked it. Dawn dish soap. It will kill all the fleas that are currently living on you cat (you really don’t want to give the bun a bath). It won’t keep the fleas from coming back and it won’t kill the eggs, but it will give immediate temporary relief of the itching. Just a suggestion if they really seem to be bothering them.

Also, make sure not to use anything that has actual medicine in it for another month as you don’t want to overdose the animals. And, whatever you do, please don’t use the brands such as Hartz and other store brands as they can seriously harm your animals.

Dosed Pepper and Piglet with Revolution Puppy and Kitten last night. Today not a scratch or a twitch. Both “Happy As”. My real concern was the litter but they seem to be fine and No Scratching either. My Rabbit Savvy Pet Shop lady advised to keep parents separate from babies for 1/2 hour after dosing which I did. 4 hrs actually, it was playpen time. This stuff is great and I can buy single re-sealable ampules. Dosage and application was sooo easy. Pepper got one droplet applied with the tip of a pinky finger to the back of the neck and Piglet got two droplets into a plastic cap and dabbed on the back of the neck with a pinky finger tip. The cats get done with Advantage tomorrow and I have been powdering around the corners with ground sage which is apparently a natural repellant. As I have all hard floors I will be mopping with Lavender and Eucalyptus oil (they say you can put it directly on Bunnies but I wouldn’t risk it) I am drying some bay leaves which I will grind up with the sage to sprinkle round the house and garden and I am going to add some of the oil mix to my soil wetter and get the little suckers where they live in the sandy garden.
