Poor baby is on Baytril now for the snuffles  we just got back from the vet. She’s not happy! Tricks on getting meds into her mouth without a helper? I’ll have to give her the morning dose myself and she doesn’t seem to be interested in eating it for me.

My bunny also has the snuffles. I haven’t put the syringe in yet but they told me to lift his head and stick it in. I don’t think I’ll do that. My plan is to do it when he’s sleepy morning and night and put the syringe in the side of his mouth and slowly put the medicine in there. Good luck!

I don’t know if the Baytril is liquid or capsule or tablet–but if it’s the latter you could crush it and put it in some mashed up banana (or measure out the liquid in the syringe they gave you and then mix it in with mashed banana or some other soft food your bunny loves).  This is how I got Olive to take her meds when she had coccidia and also her pain meds after her spay.  The vet tech showed me how to syringe feed her the medicine, but I thought, “Uh uh, no way Olive will let me do that.”  I think I tried, once, and then went the mashed-banana route.

It’s liquid, mixed with a flavoring, but she doesn’t care to take it from the syringe lol I know if one of us holds her I can syringe it into her mouth but it takes two hands to hold the squirmy butt (even the vet and vet tech had trouble with how violently she protested being held) so I can’t do the morning dose that way since i’ll be alone. :s I don’t know any soft food she likes… but she does like fruit, so I will see if she’ll eat it mashed up, thanks.

Thanks. The vet is only keeping her on for a week, then he wants to see how she’s doing after that – he gave us enough for 2 weeks just in case we need to continue after the week, but he seemed to think her case was mild and that she could kick it with the help of the antibiotics pretty easily. Her lungs were clear, the discharge from her nose is clear, no crustiness and nothing from her eyes. Poor little girl stayed under my chair when we got home for an hour then went into her room and stuffed her head under Powder’s like “the bad man hurt me, hold me”.

Well, when my buns have needed meds, I sit ont eh floor, knees up, plop bun on my legs, pull my knees up to my chest so bunny is trapped there, and stick the tip of the syringe in the SIDE of their mouth. It’s easier to get it past those sharp teeth that way. Push it in slowly, giving them a chance to swallow. Don’t want to make her unable to breathe after all.

Whatever you do, do not put your bunny upside down to give meds, they can and will inhale it that way, and you don’t want to drown your bunny with meds.

Snuffles is really not a proper term – it’s kind of a catch all term that vets use for an upper respiratory infection (I really wish vets wouldn’t use the term snuffles at all, it’s very misleading).

Hopefully the baytril will work, if it doesn’t clear it up you might want to ask the vet about getting a culture.

He gave us the medical term for the bacteria he thinks caused the infection, including going into detail of what different treatments are available (he even listed steroid anti-inflammatory via the nose, but he is not a fan of that treatment so wouldn’t use it, was just letting us know some vets do) Sarita, so he gave us the real diagnosis as well. But “snuffles” I think is just easier for the common person, I for sure can’t remember what the infections name was he used when he gave us the medical term. He said that “snuffles” is meant for a specific strain of infection (the most common one), not all respiratory infections, not sure if all vets make that distinction, but apparently ours does. He’s the only vet at the place, he owns it and he cares more about the animals than anything, so he is very thorough anytime he does anything, I quizzed him on bunny care when I chose the vet so he goes into a lot of detail on what medicines are etc and never gives them anything without explaining what he’s doing since he actually LIKES when an owner takes enough interest to make sure the vet knows what they are doing. On top of all that, his prices are kept cheap ($46 for a checkup and 30 doses of baytril).

Hmm, didn’t think holding them that way would be secure enough, but I think I will try your way Monkey, thanks. She was not interested in it with food, she was like “that still smells like medicine, you aren’t fooling me”. It’s flavored pineapple and it’s SUPPOSED to make them like it but does she care? Nooooo. I had boyfriend help me last night and I stuck it in her cheek and I put a tiny bit in her mouth, she refused to swallow, so part of it dribbled back out onto her chin… of course then she had to lick her chin clean so she got it anyway and decided swallowing was a good idea after all for the rest of it, brat.

I think most people call pasturella multocida “Snuffles”. But you cannot know that is what the rabbit has unless you do a culture although it is very common.

Sounds like you have a great vet and that is so important.

I just got some baytril for Toffee and they use the meat flavored and compound it like your vet did. My vet explained to me why they had to use that kind of baytril instead of the other forms but darn if I can really remember why. Is yours a brownish color? I’m just glad that it’s a small dose each time that I have to administer.

No, he mixed it with a fruit flavor mix, it’s yellowish/white. He has a friend who was a pet pharmacist and he taught him a trick to use with rabbits, a certain pina colada flavoring mix that apparently works well with the baytril and is safe for them to have, but it makes the baytril only have a shelf-life of 2 weeks. It smells like pineapple juice, but Miss. Picky Bottom says it’s not cubed pineapple, so she doesn’t believe it.

He said it was just a guess on what she had, since it’s the most common – I think that is the name he used. A culture would be $50, but they have to use an outside lab since they don’t have one themselves, so he wants to try the baytril for a week first and see if that clears it up. So far this morning she’s not sneezing and has been back to chewing every thing she can get her mouth on (normal behavior for her), so seems to be helping… even if it doesn’t help my baseboards.

Pina Colada! Sounds like something I would like :~) Unfortunately Stickers is too smart to be tricked into anything.

Glad she is feeling better too.

Well, she started the meds on Monday and it is now Wednesday night – she has only sneezed 3 times since she started the Baytril, so I think it’s working. Her nose is still a little red and she hates me for the medicine giving, but hopefully this is an end to her sneezing! She hasn’t sneezed at all today so far \o/ now if I can just get her to stop thumping and foot flicking me lol

Oh boy are rabbits smart things – she’s gotten the idea that she gets medicine twice a day 12 hours apart. So now, exactly at her dosing time, she runs and hides. Last night she hid under the bird cage and I had to move it to get the little thing. She won’t even come to me for a craisin anymore. lol But all of her symptoms are gone, so I am just going to finish out the treatment to make sure it’s all gone then let the vet know whats up.
