Hello everyone!  Can anybody tell me what they use to freshen the room that their bunnies are in?  I just had an issue where the area rug that the pens are on got water in it from the water bottles and a mildew smell filled the room.  I just cleaned the rug with Nature’s Miracle Odor Eliminator for cats, and then I took baking soda and rubbed it into the area, as well.  I put my nose right up on the area and I couldn’t smell the mildew anymore.  I would like to freshen the room/keep the room fresh and I want to do it safely for my bunnies.

        Any suggestions are appreciated.

        Thanks!

Coffee grounds, a bowl of vinegar, or a bunch of fresh flowers work well, placed out of bunnies reach of course

Haha well my bf bought me roses and my whole room smells so good, I wish I could have them all the time! I’ve heard baking soda can help (out of bunny’s reach). I know it’s almost winter but opening the window for a little bit I’ve found really can make a difference.

Baking soda, cleaning with 50/50 water and vinegar mix, and I burn incense all the time… so that helps. Haha.

incense can be hard on bunny lungs though, so be careful.

I have a citrus magic solid air freshener on the windowsill above my rabbit’s cage, it helps some.

You could also use those oil diffusers. I also used the plug in air fresheners. I couldn’t stand them very long so mainly just plugged one in for a bit before I had company over. If I was doing a major clean, I would block them from the living room (for example) spray febreze on the carpet (being careful not to get close to their things/area) and then turn on a fan so it dried faster.

I did my own research on baking soda litter. My dad had gotten a bag of Yesterday News with a “fresh” scent. It had baking soda in it. Do not add baking soda to anything they might ingest. You can clean it with it, but make sure not to leave any behind. It basically causes all animals (including us) to vomit when ingested and rabbits can’t vomit so it can kill them. Not wanting to scare you at all but I didn’t know exactly why you couldn’t use litter with baking soda in it until I researched it.

I have safely used plug ins around both my rabbits. Because the smell was usually very intense at first, they would avoid the area it was plugged in at as it was the same as spraying stinky perfume somewhere. lol I also got one of those candle warmers where it heats up the wax and releases the scent that way. After Eddie tried jumping over the coffee table to get to me, I decided it was best not to light candles too often as he landed on the unlit candles sitting there. LOL

Before I had to move back in with my dad, I had my bunnies in the living room of my apartment. The only thing that really helped with the smell is making sure I changed their litter regularly. Other things just masked the smell. I couldn’t ever hardly wait for it to warm up so I could air out the apartment every spring. lol If you use the oil diffusers, I recommend not using any food scents. I had a cinnamon one and it made me hungry every time I walked past it. LOL

The incense isn’t near the rabbit cage. (where she hangs out all day). It’s on the other side of the room with me.

Oh I also forgot I have this oil burner thingy from the Body Shop. I mix 3 drops each of satsuma, strawberry, and madarin & tangelo, water it down to 50/50%. It’s light and smells really good. Of course you have you have to keep it way out of the bunny’s jumping reach.

But it is still in the same room? I personally wouldn’t risk it

I know from experience, incense doesn’t stay in half the room The scent goes everywhere, so if you do want to use it, use it in another room, with the bunny room door shut.

You also need to be careful with citrus scents. Dana Krempels once told me that it can be irritating to a rabbit’s respiratory system.

I try to find more natural ways to keep thing smelling fresh and nice. See a previous thread (and you can scroll down to my post as I had a lot of different tips). It’s also a a good thread for more ideas from other members as well. https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/117823/Default.aspx
