Has anyone ever taken their rabbit on a long car ride? I’ve taken him on 3 hour rides and he was fine, but this ride would be 8-10 hrs and I am worried about that.

We don’t know anyone here that could take care of him, and I am afraid to leave him at my fiances parents house on our way there, I really don’t trust them to take care of him. When we visit them or they visit us he gets very upset. I worry they won’t feed him properly or put him outside, they think rabbit just need pellets and that is that.

I wouldn’t worry. I’ve done a couple trips now, driving rescue buns down to california. They started in Canada, I picked them up in oregon, dropped em off in North cali, and they went on to san diego. They’ll be fine, just take breaks every hour or 2.

I wouldn’t worry! My parents are more than 7 hours away and the buns have never had an issue. I find that bunnies don’t generally eat or drink while traveling and water can get messy, so I just include some lettuce leaves (they contain a lot of water) in case anybun gets thirsty. My rabbits don’t drink often anyway, so it’s not really an issue. Some hay in the carrier might be helpful too, though it can make a mess.

I’ve driven a rabbit from Connecticut to Florida; then from Florida to Virginia; then back to Florida, and finally all the way out to Washington state.  Flipflop got used to travel and it wasn’t a problem for her.  She was a very well adjusted bunny!  I wouldn’t worry too much about it if that’s what you decide to do.

I would do the drive then

I look back and wonder ‘what was I thinking!?!?!’ but I took Rupert and Kahlua to Vancouver (12 hour drive plus stops) and back to adopt Chuck. They did JUST FINE. I opened my trunk up by folding down a seat (my mom killed me for bunny pee on her suitcase) but they made a fort in the trunk. They were timid for maybe an hour and then went about business. I did critical care/apple juice every three hours (just in case) and had veggies and a water bottle available the whole time (plus pellets and hay).

They did fine. I had so many people come up at rest stops to meet them. I ruined a hotel room with hay (whyyyyy ddn’t I bring my little vaccum???). It was great, they met in neutral territory, and had a car ride to associate with the new bunny, and we had people who heard us through the walls and wanted to meet the bunnies (in the ‘no pets’ hotel…)…that maid probaly wondered why there was hay in a hotel room the next day…

But at any rate dead of summer across BC travel and they were fine. WE blocked out windows with pillow cases and stopped lots and had everything available to them. But they adjust to it, and acted no different then at home…peeing on my moms suitcase and making forts

And if your worried about long distance, my vet went to school at the vet school |(only one) six hours away, she came home (here) every weekend with her guinea pig and dog…on the seat next to her. So yes-animals travel well-especially in cars

So my advice-take him with you

Ok, thanks guys. I think we will take him, I wouldn’t be able to enjoy visiting my family if I was worried about my little bunny the entire time, and I’m the only person he trusts so I think he would be really upset if we were separated for over a week.
