Mimzy got me up with a severe quacking cough this morning. I would’ve thought it was the dog or one of the cats hacking up a hairball until I realized it was him! It sounded like a sneeze and a cough combined with him strangling and I thought he was choking to death. It only lasted for about 5 sneezes/coughs, but it frightened me terribly. I tried rubbing his throat and he hopped into the litter box and that was it. I was afraid to leave him for most of the day in case he did it again. He got his metacam and some benadryl to help. He’s been okay the rest of the day, but I am wondering if even an isolated incident like this is vet visit-worthy?

He’s got his usual bit of snot. There’s no blueness to his lips, ears or tongue. No sound from his chest (as best I can hear without a stethoscope) that alarms me. He still has that odd breathing that he does while he sleeps, but he’s had plenty of chest xrays without any sign of pneumonia (last one was just the other month) and I don’t think anything there has changed. Not sure I’d want him on antibiotics again after the TMS reaction, but I’d be asking for Baytril anyway, he seems to do well on that. Don’t want to get a script for him unless he really needs it even though he’s supposed to be able to have Baytril if his ‘snuffles’ symptoms recur just to try to keep them under control.

What do you all think? Take him in or wait and see if he does it again? I suppose I could just call tomorrow and see if his favorite vet is in this weekend. Nothing wrong with asking questions. We did have our new air purifier/ionizer on last night and he did have a lot of hay dust on the floor overnight…maybe he just snorked something down the wrong way and couldn’t shake it lose? He didn’t seem to be sneezing before this coughing fit. I hope to God I never hear him do anything like that again, I was terrified I was going to lose him right then and there.

Even though we had fresh snow last night, I decided not to bring any in today for him to sit in, just in case he picked something up that way or stressed his immune system chilling himself too much last time. He does’t get it every day, just when we have fresh powder.

Many thankies in advance for your help.

I had just finished posting to another post with a health concern of your bunny, so I am not sure if any of the info I gave there would be helpful or not for this situation.

If he seems fine now then I would assume it could wait until you are able to call your vet.  Of course, it’s very difficult to recommend anything over the internet. I’d hate to say, “oh sure wait” and that have disasterous results — I wouldn’t want that kind of responsibility, so ulitimately, you have to make that kind of judgement call.

But I am wondering if it is at all possible to get a video camera ready, and set in a place that you can get to at a moment’s notice —and just start filming when he gets these fits.  The reason I say this, is that is the only way that my vet could actually SEE something was wrong about Jack’s breathing was via a video tape I brought to the vets office.   He seemed fine at the Vets office (because he was breathing heavy anyway—just like any rabbit would), but when I showed her how he breathed at complete rest back at home via the Video camera, she knew right away something was wrong and ordered the tests that then finally revealed he had lung cancer.

So there may be a kind of cough or sneeze that he is doing that may cue her into what’s really going on if you can get video of it.

I was hoping to do that and left my daughter to watch him while I walked the dog, but guess what…took my phone with me (with the camera on it) and of course she says he coughed while I was out. @_@ I’ll be giving a call to my vet in the a.m. just to be sure he doesn’t need to be seen.
Hubby really thinks it’s the dryness. We’re down to -9 tonight and humidity in the house is in the 40’s. It’s bad enough I could almost guzzle plain water, which is odd for me.
Hopefully he passes the night okay. I just worry that it’s developing pneumonia. I read that can kill a bun in 2 days.

Saw your other post. We don’t have the money or the right insurance for that kind of reconstruction of the house (to get rid of any mold)…honestly I think this place needs demolishing. >_<
I’m sorry to hear of your mom’s other troubles. I’ll keep you all in my prayers.

Hoping that coughing was just a fluke and that there’s nothing wrong that will need another vet visit.

Well I was listening to him most of the night and this morning he’s had a few sneezes…his usual ones…I don’t hear that cough again and am wondering, with how ambiguous my daughter was with her description last night, if he wasn’t just sneezing.
Still going to call to see if his vet is in today, but if we don’t have to rush him in I won’t stress him with a needless trip in.

Any and all vibes would be appreciated, just in case.
Thanks LPT, for your good wishes. I hope Bindi is still doing well too.
